Default Yamaha 30

So while I wait for the Evinrude 150 to sell I decided to give my Yamaha 30 some love. Sanded down and painted cowling and ordered some new decals. Going to work in the engine and get it sanded and painted.

The lower unit I have I got the cavitation plate pieces that were broken off and welded back on.
BUT the lower unit is shot.
Now try and find a used lower unit with out breaking the bank or have it rebuilt...got a quote for over $1000.

Rattle can of Yamaha blue and 2 coats of clear. It's not perfect but a hell of a lot better than it was

So today I noticed that I totally messed up on the paint job on the cowling. Apparently in my haste to get the job done I applied the clear coat to soon and it crinkled the paint in several areas. So back to square one. At least I found out before I cleared the engine.

So now I'm pissed.. I sanded down the cowling not all the way to the glass and resprayed it with primer and AGAIN I get the same results..what am I doing wrong? Maybe using the wrong primer?

What's strange is that the engine came out nice

Going to strip it and start all over

I would use moeller primer if you’re using Moeller paint. It looks like you may have applied too much.Once you get it sanded down, do an initial “tact coat” by spraying a little further away from the cowl and give it a bit to start to dry. It’ll look a little rough but it will give the paint something to hang on to. Better to do more light coats than a heavy coat. Fight the urge to do “just a little more”

When you go to apply the clear coat, there’s an awesome video on YouTube about spray painting clear coat. The guy says that it’s tough to get enough clear out of a single can to give a deep coat. He shows how to use two cans side by side. I tried this on my Tohatsu and it came out nearly perfect. Ill try to find the address for this video.

When I painted mine I decided to replace the insulation on the inside of the cowl. I checked out some of the insulation kits and they were all over $125. They all seemed to use neoprene rubber. I ended up using the “Anti fatigue floor mat” from Harbor freight (about $7) It’s 1/2” neoprene. I carefully cut the old foam out and used it as a pattern to cut out the Harbor Freight stuff. Sprayed generously with 3m spray adhesive and installed it. The whole thing cost about $30 and really cut down the noise. It’s held rock solid for over 2 years.
