Fuel Filter...Will it work?
I have a small 8hp Yamaha OB. that I use to push a small aluminum boat around.
The problem is that I don't use it enough and no matter what I put in the tank it starts to get crappy and clogs the small jets in the carb. Does this motor have enough suction to pull gas thru an water separator filter? It seems to me that my in line filter does not do the job. Any other suggestions besides getting fresh gas every time I use it? Thanks

My 6 HP SailPro kicker won't pull more than 2 feet of head and a filter, so I suspect the Yamaha might not. The Tohatsu dealer said that I need to run it dry if I think I won't run it for a week. That seems to work pretty well. If it sits for more than a week, then I drain the float bowls too.
If that isn't the problem then I have a thought-you could polish the fuel in your tank with a squeeze bulb to push fuel from the tank thru a separator and return it to the tank. Assuming you have a smallish tank, then this might be practical. Most of the crap is on the bottom, so you could squeeze it for a bit before starting? |

No and yes.
I have done the run dry, but it really does not work. I know its just gas problems and little jets. I take the carb apart clean it and get new gas and it runs fine. Leave sit more than a few weeks, and POW!

I run a T8 8hp yamaha kicker on my boat,and it sits for fairly long periods with no use.It pulls the fuel uphill thru two 10 micronfilters.
I have two water separator filters,one 10 micron the the tank outlet,and another at the main engine(I/O). I have the fuel line for the kicker connected to the spare output port on the second filter.I have the fuel primer bulb about a foot from the kickers fuel connection. We troll for hours on end with no problem,the kicker pulls the fuel with no problem.I also run Startron as a rule whenever I put gas in the tank.Not sure if it really works,but so far after 4 years,(knock on wood,hope I'm not jinxing myself)I haven't had any carb issues.

I have had problems with other small engines when the fuel hoses on the engine start to break down. Find a lot of small black particles in carb and float chamber.

I run a Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke w/ a racor and have never had a problem.

Yes on filter...
All of the charter companies in the BVI (and presumably elsewhere) run a small filter on all of their dinghies/ outboards so I would say no problem on pulling through a filter. I was amazed that all dinghies I have seen (been there on a few different occasions) are equipped with them. Must speak to the quality of fuel they get...
They are all transom mounted water separator types. Most of the motors down there seem to be 8, 9.9 and 15 hp yamaha 2 strokes. I wouldn't hesitate to run one on my own 8hp yamaha. Ive got a '99 8hp two stroke on my 9' Boston Whaler and it gets around darn good and always starts on the first pull... |
