Fishing the intercoastal in South Florida
Hey fellas I'm going to visit my Grandparents in Naples, FL and I've rented a boat for a day and wanted to get some fishing in. I'm renting the boat over near Marco Island.
I'm not bringing any major gear to troll with. I'll have my Shimano Spheros 4000 and 8000 spinning reels. I was hoping y'all would be able to put me in the right direction, with lures or bait or setups.... maybe even a tackle shop (preferably) a local guy that I can support. Thanks for the help

i fish marco island once a year every spring and from experiance i can tell you it is worth it to find a local back country guide to take you out if you are targeting something in particular like reds or snook, it is great fishing their but you realy need to know the area. when i take my boat over i have had the best luck at the bridges and the gulf side beaches just north of marco. Good Luck!
sorry dont have any names for you as far as guides but theirs plenty around and easy to find. and avoid the bigger company ones, they just park you in the channel and its a tourist crapp deal.

Hugo gives very good advice. Not sure if you were going to fish alone or with family, however the cost of a guide for one day, versus a rental in water you don't know, is the way to go!!

It is a family trip, so a guide is out of the question. I've done a little reading and found a bit of info on how to fish tarpon, but very little info was given on bait. It gave me the info on how to hook dead vs live bait which I already know. I'm assuming I"ll just go down with some shades or something and go from there.
They gave a tip of fishin the shadows of the bridge for tarpon, and a couple points on how to release the anchor and such. Thanks for the info fellas

Well I did the family trip. We rented from Rose Marina on Marco Island and I spoke to a small tackle shop Capt Petes bait and tackle near Tin City.
First off I want to plug these two business because they were so accomodating to tourists coming down. Rose Marina gave us a 20 ft tide water center console so kind and helpful. And the guy at Capt Petes bait and tackle I told him what I had brought with me for rods and gave me a couple tips on fishing the area. And what bait was around. Because of our rental we weren't allowed in some of the hot spots for fishing. But we were able to get on some fish. And although I'd like to of hooked up on a tarpon/kingfish or grouper. The half a dozen amber jacks, lady fish, spanish mackerel and a crap load of catfish. Made the day worth it.

Mom and Dad are still in the Sunshine state, she has some of them. We hooked up a MONSTER Too. But after thinking about it I'm pretty sure we hooked up a ray. Because it didn't take much line until you started cranking on her. And then she'd run and say F you I ain't going anywhere.
