Scupper drain wood boxes
Guys,
I have read many posts on the replacement of a vertical thru hull scupper drain. So i dont want to be redundant but i have a question on the wood boxes which I've also read the thru hulls are embedded and hollowed thru. I dont seem to have a wood box and I can see foam in between the stringer and the fiberglass cylinder which is supported and packed thick with fiberglass surrounding the thru hull I recently found water intrusion and a leak around this cylinder with chipped and peeled epoxy at the base of it. I do not see any wood box which i have read about. I plan to pull and replace old scupper drain with new one as soon as i find the tool and have the time. Has anyone seen or heard of the thru hull wood box not existing? Any ideas on what to do if they do not there? I will upload pics of this next time I go to the boat. Thanks in advance for any input, GR |

When the factory assembled the boat, they slide in 2 pieces of plywood buttered up with potter putty in between the inner hull and outer. That is what makes the 'box' you are talking about. It sounds like the ply has all rotted away and so may have the brass drain tube. That could be your leak.

Scupper support block
What year and model do you have? The wood block is usually wrapped in glass tape and putty so you cant really tell its a wood block until you pop out the old scuppers. Here's a link to pics of my 72 Seafari scupper repair. In the 9th picture you can see a mirror image the epoxy flowing in at the base of the wrapped block, where the water was was doing the same. Block shrinks and expands with moisture over the years. Eventually brass tube separates and water starts rotting wood block, leading to the cracks in the putty, and water ingress...or something like that. Common problem, easy fix.
Good luck. Lot of threads on this. Good luck. As far as tooling goes, I knocked the old brass out with a piece of pvc pipe. Others have used sockets and dowels, etc. The flaring tool is made by moeller and available from clrmarine.com for about $35' http://s261.beta.photobucket.com/use...upper%20Repair

It was mahogany in mine buttered with potter putty. They leaked, I replaced them with long bronze ones modified to fit.

Sounds like the guys used anything kicking around the shop that would make up the space! HA!

The scupper blocks in my 74 Tsunami were big one piece blocks of fir bedded in some putty, with a real lousy applied layer of glass. They were both rotted and needed replacement.
I ended up using a piece of 6x6 pressure treated yellow pine that I had laying around for years. It was a solid piece with no splits and was dry as a bone. I shaped it to the dimensions needed, marked where the holes needed to be,and drilled them on a drill press. I gave them a couple coats of epoxy resin on the outside of the block and the inside of the holes and bedded them back in place. I Re-installed new tubes basically the same way McGillicuddy did.(thanks for the great pics Gillie)

Good info, thanks for the replies and pics. I hope i am mistaken and there is a block for deck reinforcement and support around the thru hull. If there are blocks in there they are either small 2''x2'' or rounded off like a cylinder...I hope they are not rotted but seems as though i will be replacing them either way. Will be doing more investigating by the end of the week and will let you know exactly what i find, with pics. This is on a '74 20 SF.

Here is a close up of my scupper thru hulls from inside the port hatch by motor well. Does anyones look like this? It seems awfully narrow to have blocks in there. I plan to pull out thru hull and see what is inside and check condition. I was going to fill with epxoy, retap and drill new hole for tube. But seems wise, if there is no solid wood around hte tube to clear this and glass in place wood blocks then drill thru hull into wood. I would appreciate any tips or thoughts for this job.

My 75 20SF looks like yours - no wood in mine. We replaced the tubes and moved on.
