water pressure question
HI , I am new to the form so I appoligise if this question has already been delt with.
That said here is my question, the previous owner removed the thermostats in my Evinrude 150 Hp possible to make it run cooler, I found that the impeller was toasted. My water pressure guage marely moves and hangs between 3 to 5. what should the pressure be and what might cause the problem if there is one, maby the missing thermostats? Also what should the heat range be for a 1993 Evinrude 150 Hp. I believe that my temp sensoes in the heads close at about 170 deg. |

Put a new impeller in. If the cup and the housing and wear plate are in nice shape reuse them, if not then buy the whole assembly. If everything is scored, dinged, grooved it can really effect the efficiency and life of a new impeller. Put thermostats in and remove the bypass valves and seal and make sure they aren't melted and sticking from an overheat. I think the thermostat on those is 143F. It runs a little warmer idling and a little cooler on plane in good working order generally speaking.

pressure
you may want to see if that engine has pressure relief valves, thay are usually plastic, look like a hat profile and have a spring. I have seen them melt. As workingprogress mentioned with the Tstats. Thos pressure relief valves are important, if they are removed or stuck in open , sometimes not enough pressure is built up to force water up ,to the upper parts of the engine. I have experienced this on my yamaha. I did have a 93 evinrude spitfire, but i cant remember for sure if it has pressure relief/poppit valves.

Those valves are referred to as poppit valves - they are important as mentioned above - new housing and everything and put the stats back in - should run about 140 170 is too high

Get new o rings for the t stat covers also liberal use of vaseline on the threads and o rings as they can leak and corrode the sparky plugy thingies.
Salt comes out of suspension at 160 deg so you may have some cooling passage blockage. Check that. The motah will run rich w/o stats so decarb the motah as well. My `96 150 runs at 147. Harbor Freight has infra red temp guns for really short money. Shoot each cylinder on the muffs. Don`t turn the hose on more than half flow or so. Over 45psi or so is a no no. Change out all lines from the tank to the motah. New Racor and bulb too. Avoid E 10 like the plague. Use only Champion QL series plugs. I don`t like it either. Your electronics will thank you though. Some folks seem to like the Pennzoil semi synth. 15 clams @ wally. I also pre mix, but that`s up to you. Cheers, GFS |

Do all the maintenance mentioned above every two years!! oh yeah, NEVER ever run the engine without water going through the water pump. Even if you don't use the boat very much, spend the time and money for regualr maintenance on the water pump, thermostats, etc. As the commercial says.....you will thank me later. Good luck.
