Default volvo 280 steering

The steering on my "new" sceptre leaves something to be desired. Its a volvo 280 drive. I have tried adjusting the steering fin, but it did very little good. Is this pretty common with these or is something wearing out in it. I can wiggle the drive some side to side (not much) if that means anything.

It has 550 hours on it. thanks

Hey Rod,
Did you try asking this on GLA or the Hull truth? There are a lot more I/O guys on them.
I don't know anything about the old Volvos, but my Merc Alpha steers very easily.
Is it hard to steer,or does it pull to one side all the time?
I think if you adjusted the fin as many ways as possible then it may be something in the drive.
I have a good friend who is a marine mechanic on lake Ontario who knows all there is about outdrives.I'll give him a call after he's done fishing the Niagara Pro-Am and see if I can get you an answer.
I'm assuming it's the original drive from the seventies, yes?

Give me a buzz next week sometime, and let me know how that "NEW" 1978 Sceptre is treating you.
For the steal you got on it,even if you had to replace the drive it would still be an awesome deal.Hope everything else is working fine on it (John R Big Easy)
