Deck Paint Over Old...Prep? Products?
I know there are several good products for painting the deck, console, gunwhales, etc. I was thinking of either an Awlgrip or Interlux product. I was thinking a two-part epoxy was the way to go, rolled and tipped. Lot's of old posts to read, and I will, but here is my question:
My 73 has been painted by God knows who with God knows what. It is white, and it is chalky. What will I need to do to paint over this? Do I have to remove ALL of the old finish/finishes? Should I use the 2 part paint, or something else? |

To really answer your question you will have to get the answer to the God knows what part. Some guys paint their boats with good two part paints and others paint their boats with what ever. The first thing to figure out is any of the paint peeling or cracking off. If poor adherence game over sanding off is the only way. If it’s not peeling off is it compatible with you two part paint you choose. Epoxy paints don’t always marry well with other based paints. You might want to call the manufacturer of the paint you pick and ask this question. As for me I took no chances I sanded it down to the gel coat did my repair work on the hull, and follow all the steps with priming and sanding. It was a lot of work but came out pretty good. I used Sterling paint which is another brand of that two part paint and is real good with the role and tip method. Before The middle Finished FellowShip Just for the Grins |

Maybe I read more into the post that I should have. If you are Just doing the deck you will still have to deal with the compatibility issues and the proper steps but you will be adding a grit to the paint so you will not slide around on the deck. FellowShip Just for the Grins |

Fellowship....your "after" looks great. I might have to consider Sterling too. My hull actually looks great, except for the "interior." I guess I might have to sand, but what bugs me is I guess I will have to sand the existing non-skid off. Wouldn't mind starting fresh I guess anyways.
What do you recommend sanding with to avoid having to fair everything? |

I sanded "still in the process of sanding" the whole boat which was painted previously with "God knows what" So i did/am sanding the entire boat down to the orginal gelcoat and plan on using alwlgrip!

I did most everything with a electric orbital sander.

Re: Deck Paint Over Old...Prep? Products?
I used a random orbital as well on most of the boat. For the recessed strips in the floor I used a product called Aqua Strip. It worked great. I'm fairly certain the inside of the boat wasn't preped all that well so alot of the interior paint was coming up already. Some of the more stuborn areas took multiple applications but it still was much easier than trying to sand in those small grooves.
