Default Bait well mods?

Hi...I'm the new owner of a slightly used 1976 18 footer. Since there is no bilge or bilge pump access while at sea I was going to cut the bailwell out and was concerned about deck integrity.
I'd like to use the existing hatch cover and make it a quick release hatch. Has anyone done this before? Or is there an available existing water tight hatch cover that would do the job?

Default Re: Bait well mods?

el griefo,

I used to have a 1976 18' and although I didn't do what you are proposing, I've spoken with a guy who did. He used the resulting space not only as an easy bilge access but as a wet locker as well.

As that aft fishbox doesn't drain except when on plane, there are certainly improvements that could be made for that space.

Good luck and let us know what you figure out/
