Default How to put the new tank back in?

Any thoughts on the best way to put in a new aluminum tank? The old one was foamed in, didn't seem to have any problems, but the foam was loaded with water. So I had a new 100 gal tank fabricated. I'm planning on using David Pascoe's method for installing the tank.

Based off of this method, does anyone see a problem with it?

Rich

I've looked at that method too. Looks good to me just a little more involved than the foam method. I would think its better to do it that way though (using Pascoe's method). The last tank install was a combo method.....rubber strips on the bottom of the tank and foam on the sides Oh yeah when I pulled the foam off the sides of the tank there was quite a bit of corrosion....and from the looks of the topside of the tank it wasnt that old.

Hey RS

Just an FYI .... I took my tank out last fall and it was only foamed on the sides. It came out real easy ... so to speak...just jammed a saw down in the foam and started to hack away. Sooner or later it will break free ( there's always the come-along and chain method of tank removal ). I've got the larger console on the boat and was able to get the tank out without removing the console. What made that easy was that I did not have any bulkheads forward or aft of the tank...but will most likely put in bulkheads when it goes back together.

RICHARD...SCOTT:

YOU guy's are going to be the death of me[just kiddin]. BEFORE you do anything to those new tanks, paint, epox. anything to seal up the tank before you drop them into the hole.

If your going to use rubba under, use lot's of it, just don't use a few pcs.

you get into trouble when there is nothing between the tank and the rubba, water get's inbetween the two and will start to rot out the day you put it in, same with the sides.

THE TANK NEEDS TO BE SEALED all the way around. Before you do anything with it.

Of coarse you can do what most do an just throw it in say screw it, good enough. that's why YOUR putting in new one's now.....just like I did.

this weather s**** ....H.H.S.A

HA RICH
I ALSO REPLACED MY 100 GAL TANK WITH A 120 GAL TANK WITH IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS I ALSO USED DAVID PASCOE’S METHOD OF PUTTING IN A TANK. IT WORKS GREAT AND HE MAKES A LOT OF SENSE ON WHY YOU SHOULD DO IT HIS WAY. I DID MODIFY HIS APPROACH A LITTLE BY PUTTING TWO BRACKETS WELDED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK ONE IN THE FRONT AND THE OTHER IN THE BACK JUST IN CASE. IT MADE ME FEEL BETTER BUT THE TRUTH OF IT IS A PROBABLY DIDN’T NEED THE TWO BRACKETS. IF I EVERY HAD TO TAKE OUT THIS TANK I THINK IT WOULD HAVE TO COME OUT IN PIECES THAT 5200 WON'T WANT TO QUIT DOING IT’S JOB.

Plexiglas...thats the ticket!!!

But really....the tanks I have quotes on all included the epoxy coating....One of them was even willing to knock off $75 bucks if I did it. I think I'll leave the coating work up to them.....dont feel like getting coated myself!!!

HA REEL SMOKER
I HAVE A 1977 23 WITH THE SUPER CONSOL IT HAD A STEP DOWN INTO THE CONSOL THROUGH THAT FRONT DOOR AND SEAT. I REMOVED THE SEAT FROM THE DOOR TO MAKE A FLAT DOOR AND THEN I REMOVED THE STEP DOWN MOVED THE GAS TANK 18” FORWARD FROM THE STERN AND FILLED UP THAT 32” SPACE OF THE STEP DOWN WITH THE ADDED 20 GAL OR GAS I PUT A BULK HEAD IN THE FRONT AND IN THE BACK OF THE TANK. I WENT WITH A 12X28X7” TANK IF I CAN REMEMBER CORRECTLY. BY MOVING IT FORWARD IT BETTER BALANCED THE WEIGHT. I ALSO MOVED THE LIVE WELL FORWARD FROM THE TRANSOM ABOUT 2’ I PUT A 32 GAL TANK WHERE THE NEWER SEACRAFTS PUT THEIRS NOW. AGAIN FOR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION NOW I HARDLY NEED TRIM TABS EXCEPT FOR PORT AND STARBOARD ADJUSTMENT IS CALMER SEAS. WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SNAPPER I GUESS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE MANGROVE SNAPPER THIS TIME OF YEAR. I REALLY LOVE THE MUTTON SNAPPER FISHING DOWN THERE IN KEY WEST. DO YOU PUT YOUR BOAT IN DRY STORAGE DOWN THERE OR ARE YOU SPLASHING IT AT OCEAN SIDE MARINA WHEN YOU GO OUT?

Hey Reel Smoker

These are all quotes from last month. They are based on a dimension of 76 x 28 x 12 (about 110 gallons). Every 1" of length at this width and height dimension (28 x 12) adds 1.45 gallons.

So my low quote was $640, 2nd quote was $677, and the high was $695. They all included filler/vent pick-ups, sender mount, 2-3 baffles and epoxy coat. I'm pretty certain they are all 1/8". To go to 3/16" depending on tank size and who I talked to it increased the cost by $150-225.

I'll gladly get you the phone #s ....but these are up in NJ and I'm sure you'll do much better in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area

RS,

I got my tank fabricated in RI at this place called Luthers Welding (www.lutherswelding.com) I paid aroud $700 for it. I'm sure you can get one cheaper down there. As far as the Foam, It was all Around and under the tank. It took awile to get it out, and yes I took off the console.

Steve,

I agree, It's a no brainer to coat the tank before you put it in. Just looking to see if anyone had tried this method... I have this stuff called POR 15 that I am going to use to seal the Tank. http://www.por15.com

Thanks for the responses..
