I would like to hear your experiences with Awlgrip, Interspray 800 and so on. As with all of us I'm looking for that mirror finish....so I realize that most likely means spraying...any advice/experience (good or bad) applying these products (Roll and tip or spray) or leave it to the Pros and empty out the bank account?? I was actually working with someone who would allow me to do the filling /fairing and priming work and then they would spray (due to safety concers esp. with Alwgrip and to get the wet mirror finish the first time)

I WISH I HAD MORE ADVICE WITH EXPERIENCE BUT I AM GOING THROUGH THE SAME DILEMMA AS YOU FOR NOW. I AM REDOING A 23 SEACRAFT FINISHING UP THE FAIRING PROCESS NOW. I GOT 2 QUOTES FOR $6,000 AND ONE FOR $5,000 TO SHOOT THE WHOLE BOAT IN AND OUT. WITH AWLGRIP. THAT’S WHEN I SAID SINCE I HAVE DONE ALL THE REST WHY NOT. TALKED TO THE AWLGRIP GUYS AT THE MIAMI BOAT SHOW AND SENT AWAY AND JUST GOT A TAPE ON HOW TO ROLE AND TIP AWLGRIP HAVEN’T LOOKED AT IT YET BUT FROM ALL THE INFO I HAVE ALREADY GOT YOU CAN ROLE AND TIP WITH VERY GOOD RESULTS. I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT SPRAY THE STUFF I KNOW OF A PERSON WHO SPRAYED HIS BOAT IN HIS GARAGE AND DIED FROM THE PAINT. I ALSO HAVE BEEN TOLD BY TWO SOURCES THAT THE PAINT CO. CALLED STERLING MAKES THE BEST PAINT FOR ROLE AND BRUSH METHOD. I HAVE BOUGHT SOME OF IT AND HAVE BEEN DOING SMALL PIECES LIKE HATCHES AND SUCH LIKE. SO FAR IT HAS BEEN COMING OUT PRETTY GOOD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DUST GETTING ON THE PAINT AND CAUSING IMPERFECTIONS DUE TO DUST CONTAMINATION. I WILL BE ABLE TO TALK WITH EXPERIENCE IN ABOUT 2 MONTHS FROM NOW BUT FOR NOW SAVING $4,000 AND DOING IT MYSELF SEEMS PRETTY GOOD TO ME. THAT WILL BUY A LOT OF T-TOP, LEANING POST, AND ELECTRONICS.

Boy am I going to pick you brain [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

I have a few quotes alittle higher than that (3 -3,500) just for the hull and thats flat(unlike the inside)!!!!I have also heard of some guys painting the hull for around 2,000 (that more like it). I hear you about the dangers involved although I have not heard of anyone dying from it. I love the boat but not that much. I've seen and watched a 35 ft boat rolled and tipped (what a huge job!!!) it came out pretty good but was not smooth as glass. My other problem is that the boat is in the open and not under cover. Painting would need to be done on select days and in a time frame that it would dry enough so that as evening set and it got damp the paint would not suffer from the moisture in the air (on the east coast as I'm sure your aware to get dry air its out of the west and usually windy, otherwise its off the ocean and wet [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img]

Could you send me the address or the info on how to get that tape. I have talked with alwgrip also, nice guys, but only got the booklet on "how to"/painting. If you have any pics of the work you've done I would love to see it (Im sure others would also)

I struggled with this too.As far as the outside, I would go with a 2 - part, and you could probably roll and tip those large flat surfaces with good results - I can't say from personal experience.The other option might be to do all the prep work and have a discount autobody place shoot it with a 2 - part.I've seen the Devoe paint and it looks good - Devthane, I believe it is.On my cockpit, I sprayed it with the Petit 1 part.If you look at all the contours in the cockpit/deck, it looks to me like rolling and tipping would be a disaster - or at the least very time consuming.I can say that I was pretty pleased with the petit, I put on 3 finish coats, and it set up pretty hard and was a piece of cake to spray.I heard horror stories about spraying 2 parts too, it's no B.S. - you need negative pressure respirator and its not something you want to do in the yard.

The contours on the inside of the boat are going to be tough but atleast it provides a start/finish point(no wet edge)Our boats share the same layout. Sanding after painting must be rather time consuming also. I think when we talked before this board was up you mentioned that the paint was Easypoxy?? what kind of set up do you have for spraying?? how big is the compressor and what kind of spray gun?? I assume you did all the non skid and how hard was that??

I may need to see what kind of deal I can get if I do all the preliminary work and just let them Awlgrip it. The weather thing concerns me and only working on it on the weekends really limits the amount of good weather I'll have

Like I said before you did a really nice job from the looks of the pics on the site and thanks for the info Keep it coming!!!

I had real good luck with Imron on my old mako and cost me around 500 bucks. (Mid 1980's) Sprayed it outside , fumes are very toxic so respirator was mandatory. Heres a link to some pix, any questions Ill try and answer, Craig

Hows the painting coming??

I received that video on Awlgrip and watched it, (the Wife thought I bought a porno, after she saw that it was about painting I think she wished it was one [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] !!!She couldnt believe that I needed a video on how to paint)....Anyhow .... boy do they make that look easy! I think a little too easy....I also talked with Awlgrip about what I wanted to do.....this was all provoked by a $ 9,000 estimate I received to paint the inside of the boat!!! Thats alittle rich for me!!! Then went to a big marina and they have an 80'-90' yacht that they are fixing up that will occupy the spraying shed until August!!! So I think I'll give the roll&tip thing a whirl..

Are you using Awlgrip or did you say you were trying out Sterling Paints??? Hows it working for you??
