Dont blame you one bit for not wanting to get under there and have all those paintchips falling in you face.....good point about the vapor thing with the strippers.....wonder why I felt so good the day I did that work [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] ... But really on a serious note when I start playing with that stuff .. even sanding … I use a respirator with dust and vapor cartridges While I cant speak from experience on what to use for painting.... I will say that in all the conversations I have had with Awlgrip and Sterling they have both recommended the use of foam at least for the application of the paint.....Thing thats good is that you have seen good results using the other roller..so when you use the foam you should get super results [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img] I'm sure its going to look great!! WHEN I WAS DOING THE EPOXY WORK A GRINDER AND THE ORBITAL SANDER WAS THE BEST WAY TO GO. NOW ORBITAL SANDER AND HAND SANDING WITH AND WITH OUT A BLOCK IS THE WAY TO GO. ON THE BOTTOM WILL BE A ORBITAL SANDER WITH 150 GRIT AND ON THE PAINT AND PRIMER 220 GRIT. ON THE BOTTOM PAINT JOB I DON’T KNOW HOW OLD IT WAS ALL I KNOW IS I WANTED IT OFF AND I DIDN’T WANT TO DO IT MYSELF. I FIGURED ANYTHING THAT WOULD KEEP A BARNACLE OFF THE BOTTOM OF A BOAT IN NOTHING I WANTED TO BE UPSIDE DOWN AND INHALING. PLUS I HEARD OF A GUY GETTING TO MUCH OF THE VAPORS FROM THE BOTTOM PAINT REMOVER IN HIM AND HE WENT OFF TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. THE PITTING ON THE BOTTOM CAME FROM THE PROCESS OF REMOVING THE PAINT THROUGH THE BAKING SODA BLAST PLUS THEY RUFF UP THE BOTTOM FIRST BEFORE THEY PUT BOTTOM PAINT ON AND OF COURSE 25 YR OLD GEL COAT CONDITION. ON THE HATCHES & CENTER CONSOL THEY CAME OUT VERY GOOD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME DUST MIXED IN THE PAINT BY THE ROLLER COVERS WILL ONLY USE FOAM ON THE PAINT FOR NOW ON. PROGRESS REPORT
THIS WEEKEND I PRIMMERED THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE BOAT THEN SANDED THE PRIMER AND THEN FINISHED FAIRING THE OUT SIDE OF THE HULL TO THE WATER LINE. NOW I WILL BE ABLE TO PAINT THE INSIDE WITH THE FIRST COAT AND PRIMER THE OUTSIDE OF THE HULL. IT IS STARTING TO LOOK LIKE A BOAT AGAIN. WILL BE PICKING UP MY PICTURES OF THE UGLY DUCKLING STAGES OF THE BOAT TODAY SO I WILL SEND THEN SOON. I TOLD THE YAMAHA GUYS I WILL BE HAVING THEM INSTALL THE 225 IN ONE MONTH. I NEED TO GET THE PAINTING DONE AT LEAST TO THE WATER LINE FOR THEM TO DO THEIR THING. OH SCOTT I USED A NAP ROLLER COVER ON THE PRIMER THAT WORKS JUST FINE. WHAT I DID WAS TAKE SOME MASKING TAPE AND GO OVER THE ROLLER COVER TO REMOVE ANY LINT, BOY THAT HAS BEEN MY PROBLEM. I GOT TONS ON LINT OFF THE ROLLER. Glad to hear things are moving along!!! Looking forward to the pictures... Some paint questions for you ... Who did you get the paint from?....seems I can go direct to the distributor or West Marine can get it for me.. Stuff is a tad expensive [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img] 275- 350 a gallon depending on the color I pick ( and of course I have to find a color that not on the chart!!)....even the white is up there in price How much did you buy for Topside/deck...how much for the hull?? I'll be putting bottom paint on so the bottom will not get painted. Are you using the Low VOC Primers (94U-1000)and Catalysts? I was told by Sterling that they brush out really well...whats your spin on this Thanks Scott |

I BOUGH THE PAINT FROM BOAT OWNERS WAREHOUSE HERE IN FORT LAUDERDALE. I GOT 1 GAL PRIMER AND ½ GAL CATALYST WITH ONE GAL OF SNOW WHITE AND ½ GAL CATALYST FOR IT PLUS 2 QT OF BLUE MIST WITH ONE QT. SIZE NON SKID SOME TAPE AND MIXING STUFF FOR ABOUT $650.00. I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK FOR THE EXACT AMOUNT. REMEMBER WHEN YOU BUY A GAL YOU ARE GETTING 1 &1/2 GAL. TOTAL PAINT WHEN YOU MIX IT TOGETHER. I USED ABOUT ¾ OF A GAL PRIMER TO DO THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT. I WILL BUY ANOTHER GAL OF PRIMER I AM USING THE OFF WHITE PRIMER AND CATALYST. I DON’T REMEMBER THE # ON IT I THING IT WAS THE P 1000 AND U 1000 NOT SURE BUT IT IS IN THERE BROCHURE. AS FOR THE APPLICATION IT ROLES ON VERY WELL I DON’T CARE FOR THE BRUSHING APPROACH AND ONLY USE IT IN PLACES THAT THE ROLER DOES NOT FIT INTO. WHEN YOU USE A BRUSH IT STREAKS IT AND THEN THERE IS MORE TO SANDING. BUT WHEN YOU ROLE IT ON IT GOES ON PRETTY WELL AND THERE IS LESS TO SAND AND YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE TO SAND. OH BY THE WAY IT IS REALLY EASY TO SAND OFF NOT LIKE EPOXY MORE LIKE CHALK I USED 220 GRIT PAPER AND IT WORKED GREAT. I JUST DID A LIGHT SANDING ON THE NOW SKID AREA BECAUSE YOU WANT THAT RUFF ANYWAY. ON THE REST OF THE BOAT I SPENT MORE TIME TO GET IT SMOTHER. Thank you for the follow up,,,I may need to talk to you more about the paint and cost of materials. I figured out what it was going to run me to get the primer/paint etc and for about the same quantity of material I'm looking at almost double what you paid...I'll grant you that you are in a more boat rich environment than I am up here...It seems that everything down south is much cheaper...I'm sure due to competition (like having the boat painted). You hit the nail on the head about the cost of having it done by someone vs. doing it yourself ...for me up here I'm looking at 3,500 just to have the hull painted and thats the easier of the two to paint...as you have found out first hand by doing all the prep work on the inside... By the way...in prepping the hull have you noticed any "weave" showing through?? (as you look down the hull at an angle can you see the weaving pattern from the fiberglass mat) If you did ...are you going to correct it and how will you do that(high build primer???) I have seen this in some paint jobs .... and so naturally the cost can be driven by this type of correction and prep work...I've even seen a boat where the old name outline was readable through a paint job(that was done "professionally”…. I think I would have had a few words and a new paint job from that guy) It was a dark green so you could see every imperfection in the hull that wasnt properly taken care of. I THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE YOU MY WEEKEND PAINTING REPORT. I HADE A PRODUCTIVE WEEKEND I WAS ABLE TO PAINT THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE BOAT WITH ITS FIRST COAT OF TOP SIDE PAINT, PLUS I WAS ABLE TO PAINT THE SIDES OF THE BOAT WITH PRIMER. ALL IN ALL IT COME OUT PRETTY GOOD. I EVEN GOT SOME COMPLEMENTS ABOUT THE JOB WHICH I QUICKLY GAVE THE CREDIT TO THE PAINT AND NOT THE PAINTER. I USED THE NAP COVERS ON THE PRIMER WHICH I LIKE THE BEST FOR THE PRIMER COAT. IT GOES ON SMOOTH AND THICK ENOUGH THAT YOU HARDLY HAVE TO DO ANYTHING ELSE WITH IT. THE PRIMER IS THE KEY TO THIS THING USING ENOUGH AND GETTING IN ON RIGHT. AS FOR THE TOP COAT FOAM IS THE WAY TO GO AND IF YOU WAIT THE 30 TO 45 MINUTES AS THEY RECOMMEND THE PAINT IS JUST THICK ENOUGH THAT IT GOES ON NICE AND SMOOTH WITH NO RUNS. IT ALSO CAME OUT VERY WELL I FEEL LIKE I WILL BE ABLE TO PULL THIS THING OFF WITH THE ROLLER AND TIP METHOD. I AM PAINTING OUTSIDE AND THAT IS MY BIGGEST CONCERN. I AM THINKING ON MOVING THE BOAT TO PAINT THE FINAL COAT BOTH INSIDE AND OUT TO A AREA THAT I CAN CONTROL THE WIND AND DUST AND RAIN BETTER. NEXT WEEKEND I GET TO START SANDING AGAIN (OH BOY) NEED TO SAND THE PRIMER WITH 220 AND THE TOP COAT WITH 320 THEN I CAN PUT THE NON SKIT DOWN AND THE REST OF THE STUFF. I BOUGHT A SECOND GAL OF PRIMER TO FINISH OFF THE REST OF THE BOAT WITH I SHOULD HAVE SOME LEFT OVER OF THAT. WE WILL SEE.
