I have always used 3 blades, they actually didn't make 4's years ago but I don't think most 20' boats need 4's except for maximum hole shot

Absolutely right. 4 blade prop increases stern lift by 30% over a similarly configured 3-blade, but reduces top end and mid-range efficiency. 4 blades are for hole shot, lower-speed handling and maneuverability.
