200 etec on a 20'

Anyone have a etec 200 on a 20'er? I saw a thread where someone had a etec 150 and numbers looked real good. I was curious how the 200 etec numbers/performance would compare to my mariner 200.

Do you have a hp or torque curve for the Mariner? If so you might try asking the E-TEC dealer if he has a similar curve for the 200 E-TEC? Also how do the displacement's compare? The HP/Cu. in. provides a pretty good clue as to how the engine has been tuned, i.e. did they try to maximum mid-range torque or top end HP.

The NAEBM rules say the HP ratings have to be within +-10% of the real measured number. E-TEC's in general seem to put out more power than their rating; in the case of the 150 they're sandbagging by the full 10% because they've published the HP and torque curves for the 150; think it was in the 2008 or 2009 brochure. I would suspect that there is less sandbagging on 175 and even less on the 200. Given the performance I'm getting with the 150, I sure couldn't justify spending more money for either the 175 or 200! Another thing to consider is how the motor is tuned in terms of port location and exhaust passage length. The 150 has a very fat mid-range torque curve which is very desirable for operation with heavy loads in rough conditions offshore. To get the extra HP from the same displacement, it's likely the tuning on the 200 is optimized towards the high end of the rpm range, so it might actually have LESS mid-range torque than the 150! Hard to get max torque/hp at both low and high rpm without having variable cam timing on a 4-stroke or variable exhaust tuning on a 2-stroke. The V-4 E-TECs do have a tuning valve in the exhaust duct, but they have not gone to that on the V-6's as far as I know.

There was a similar question posed on the etecownersgroup.com forum on the 115 vs. 130 and the response from the experts was that the 115 was actually had a stronger mid-range than the 130. You might try posting your question there also. On a hp/ cu. in. basis, the 115 V-4 (which is 2/3's of the V-6 block) is equivalent to the 175 V-6, and I believe the 130 is approximately equivalent to the 200 V-6.

I have a 200 Merc with a T Top on a Master Angler, as much as I like the HP I think the Etec would be much stronger and overkill. Those Etecs are strong puppies, just saying you could do with less HP or at least wear goggles IMHO

The WOT speed and cruise speed of the etec 150 that were posted seem really close to what i get with my mariner 200. Thats why i was curious about the etec 200 sense its the same weight as the etec 150.

Denny and Dixon have it right, in anything less than rigging for maximum speed, torque is your best friend.

There is a 150 etec for 8500 round here if interested I could get you the info - seems like a decent price - 50 hrs I think. They are in with the Vantage flats boat company in some way, not sure what

There's a 1998 20' SeaCraft here in the Destin area with an Etec 200 on the back. No T-top or tower, but with a spray dodger on the bow, and he claims a WOT of 58-60 mph at 5800 rpms in a light chop.

It was a pretty boat: covered in kingfish blood when I saw it.
