Re: Cabo San Lucas
That's sometyhing I want to do . A guy that used to frequesnt some early fishing boards 5 years ago from Mexico used to target big Roosters from shore... 60-80 # fish caught from the shore must be ultimate and surpassed only by the rarest on a fly from the beach!
Best I've done was a 5' Sturegeon on my surf rod for 3 minutes on the Sacramento and a lost 50 pound bass that half spooled me before line disintegrated... I realize this is one of the best boat sites on the web but my heart is still in surfcasting Someday

Re: Cabo San Lucas
Again, thanks for the replies. What would you recommend for lures? First week of December.

Re: Cabo San Lucas
Jim,
I have had great success with a Japanese lure called "maria". I prefer them in pink and they have been very well received by fish all over the world (just make sure to replace the existing treble with a larger hook - either a single or a much larger treble). Otherwise, the 1oz Spro "swimming jig" works pretty well, as does the humble Sting-Silver. However, if you are comfortable with a fly rod (8-9wt being ideal), nothing will out-catch a white and chartreuse clouser minnow tied on a 1/0 hook cast from the beach. Re: Cabo San Lucas
Jim,
The Maria works great on Spanish macks and false albacore, so I would think you'd do well in Cabo on similar species - sierra, jacks, etc. Like Mark said, replace the hooks immediately. I've had many lost albies to those hooks. The YoZuri L-Jack is another good one, as is the Sting Silver. You may want to give a teaser rig a try as well - 24-36" of fluoro with a fly tied to a dropper loop at the top. Tie your jig to the bottom. Double hookups are not uncommon on MV when the albies and Spanish are around. I'd also bring a few of the Roberts Rangers in the colors John mentions. I've seen a couple TV shows where guys have caught roosterfish from the shore in Cabo on these lures. Make sure you get the "Ranger" model (2 1/4 & 3 oz). The "Bounder" is also 2 1/4 oz but is smaller in size, and it doesn't have the action of the Ranger. You could also try some of the Roberts "Peppys" - similar to the Ranger but only 3/4 oz. Their Hammer metal would be a good choice also. Good luck. |
