I believe there was 5 or 6 total deaths from shark attack that year off the Jersey shore from LBI to Matawan.

There was recently a documentary on PBS about this and yes, it was very interesting. They eventually caught a great white in a seine net towed behind a dory that was rowing around Raritan Bay, but most of the historians/scientists are convinced that the great white wasn't the fish that did most of the damage....they feel it was a bull shark because many of the attacks occurred way up Matawan Creek which is brackish and according to the experts, bull sharks can survive in brackish water and great whites cannot.
