Seal between hull and upper deck
The seal between my hull and upper deck (shell), is leaking water into the cabin. This
is covered by the bump rail. After looking under the bump rail, I can see that there is silicon, but there is a gap, and it is not sealed very well. Is silicon or 5200 a better sealer, and does it require removing the bump rail from the side.

Remove the rubrail,clean as much loose silicone as you can and run a bead of 5200 into the gaps and holes from the rubrail fasteners and you should be OK.You can also caulk the seam between the hull and the bottom of the rail with silicone to be certain the water stays out.What happens is the water is riding up the hull and getting between the rail and cap into the cabin.

I have found that silicon doesn't work for crap. OH yes it say's it will last for 50 yr's. but it does NOT stick to anything after a short time. by all means if you want it to last use 5200 . Or life caulk....silicon was not made to be used on boat's, it's just a cheap quick fix. that's why boat yards[most] like to use it. steve

Thanks for the info. My rub rail is held on by #10 1" stainless screws. Is this the standard way rubrails are held onto a '89 SeaCraft? I am pulling the rub rail off tomorrow and 5200 sealing the whole thing. Thanks again
