23 SEACRAFT PROP 3 OR 4 BLADE for 250merc
Looking to swap 3 for 4 blade ,what pitch for a 23 without t-top and runs light all the time . Need to know if it should be a 14 x 18p or 14 3/4 x 19p may go alum to start to get dialed in,so I get the best performance and top end. Looking for near 50 mph if possible. This is a 250 EFI Merc ,may cup 18 if needed later.Feedback will help.

I have a 4 merc 4 blade 19 pitch on my boat. A couple weeks ago I hit 50 mph at WOT running with a 10 mph tail wind. Engine is a 250 4stk Yamaha. Loaded down, she barely gets enough RPMs at WOT. With a t- top and lighter engine I bet you can get 50 mph pretty easy.

Also definitely check engine height with AV plate... These boats like to run at least 2" High on my last 23' i was running almost 3" high with the AV plate. No prop blow out and it would scoot. Also as Shine stated... with his 250 having Trouble spinning the 19p i would say 17p. Also u might search on Flyingfrizzle his threads. He runs a 225 merc EFI and has ran it on several boats. Also you mention running Aluminum instead, you will not get good performance from an alum. prop as you will with stainless steel or a good stainless alloy. I would buy used and find a good prop that way and if you need more or less pitch you can have it pitched up or down and also save it as a spare and buy a second higher or lower pitch. Its nice having different props to see the differences in them. Every boat and use may need something different than the last. What works normally might not work for your boat. It can be a crap shoot sometimes selecting a prop. Ken at propgods has helped many up here and he knows much more than me so reach out to him too. He has a site with a form or call him. He is the PROP MAN! If you want top end performance the Enertia Mr Shrimping mention will probably work best for that but it is still a 3 blade. Reviloution 4, is a good all around prop, but you will not get as much top speed with it as others. A Bravo 1 four Blade would be good for top end but the lowest pitch you can get is 22p but I think mercury racing has 19p custom brovo's that have PVS that have been modified for high power outboards. I have ran and keep Mirage Plus props around and Rev 4's for running different outboards on different boats and really want to get a set of Enertia's. They suppose to me the cats meow. Also they have Enertia ECO props that will be the most efficient out of most you will try for getting good Fuel Efficiency. They are made of X7 alloy and are stronger and have thinner blades for less rotating mass and cut the water better. They have large blade area and hold the water well too. I haven't ran these but read lots of good things about them.

I talked to Ken at gods, nice guy by the way and he say's REV4 17p or Power Tech OFS4 19p . I think PT he says low 50's. I may try that ,like the enertia 3 also. Will see keep feedin me more prop info, its cheaper than a engine for speed!

If you are looking for top speed I would be looking at the 3 blade options. If you are looking for holding plane in seas and stearn lift I would go with a 4 blade. The Rev 4 is a great prop but didn't work to well for me as my Tsunami definitely doesnt need stearn lift.
It's funny how the obsession over attaining top speed outshines all the other important considerations like mid-range fuel consumption, sea handling and planing. I guess if I lived on a lake it would be more important but I use my SeaCraft in the sea where top speed capabilities fall to the bottom of list.

Kmoose, I understand you, with the overall trip I make will be on a river/with tide and sound that is mostly 1 1/2 chop so the hull should work to my advantage .56 miles is my round trip so the fast cruise is my goal at 35-39mph with wot in low 50's. I travel with 60 gal fuel two rods and me.I hope to return with 20gal of fuel. Enertia 19p may work ,has 16 dia.,we"ll see.

Since we cant run in 4 and 5 footers all day we have to do something different like have a Boat that's a Speed Demon and then when it really matters chews through the waves like a Godzilla T-Rex Chomp. If i lived in your Neck of the woods I would just slap on a New Gen 2 450 ETEC V8 and call it good... Oh wait, that motor is probably 2 years out still. Or if SUZUKI would ever Bring on the 400hp or 450hp even better. Compete with the 557 at seven marine. Robert |
