HA SCOTT
THE NON SKID ON THE TWO BIG HATCH COVERS I TOOK A BELT SANDER AND SANDED IT DOWN TO MAKE A FLAT SURFACE. I THROUGH AWAY ALL THE OTHER NON SKIT ON THE DECK INCLUDING THE DECK ABOVE THE GAS TANK AND REPLACED IT WITH PLYWOOD AND ONE LAYER OF NEW 6 OZ GLASS AND ONE LAYER OF MATT GLASS PLUS FAIRING COMPOUND PRIMER AND THEN (STILL DOING THE) TWO COATS OF PAINT. AS FOR THAT SMALL ROPE STORAGE COMPARTMENT FORMICA PIECE WHEN I REMOVED THE CAP I REMOVED IT AND USED IT AS A STENCIL TO MAKE A ¾ “ PLYWOOD REPLACEMENT PIECE GLASSED BOTH SIDES FAIRED AND PAINTED IT. THEN I REPLACED IT FULLY COMPLETED BEFORE I PUT THE CAP BACK ON THE BOAT. IT ONLY HAS TWO BIG SCREWS HOLDING IT THERE. THAT FORMICA PIECE WAS DRY ROTTED AT THE BOTTOM AND WAS SHOT LIKE EVERY THING ELSE IN THE BOAT. I DON’T LEAVE MUCH OF THE ORIGINAL WOOD IN THE BOAT MAYBE ONE OR TWO SMALL PIECES NOT MUCH. I EVEN TOOK OUT THE WOOD IN THE CENTER CONSOL (BULK HEAD) AND THAT SHELF AND REPLACED THE BULKHEAD WITH A PIECE OF ½ PLYWOOD LAMINATED BOTH SIDES AND GLASSED TO THE SIDES OF THE CENTER CONSOL. WHEN I GET TOTALLY DONE I WILL TAKE PICTURES TO SHOW YOU GUYS. TODAY I REAMED OUT THE TWO LITTLE HOLES THAT HELP YOU PICK UP THOSE TWO SMALL HATCH COVERS IN THE BACK OF THE BOAT AND PUT TO FLUSH MOUNT HATCH COVERS LIFTS WHERE THE HOLES WERE. I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO PAINT THE BOAT THIS WEEKEND SO I CAN START PUTTING SOME OF THE PIECES BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. I GOT A GUY THAT SAID HE WOULD CALL ME ABOUT A QUOTE TO SPRAY GEL COAT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT I AM GOING TO LET HIM DO IT NEXT WEEK I WILL SAND IT SMOOTH AND BUFF IT OUT HE WILL JUST DO ANY FAIRING ON THE BOTTOM AND SPRAY. IT WOULD SAVE ME SOME TIME AND I DON’T LIKE TO DO LOTS OF WORK ON MY BACK WORKING UPWARDS MY SHOULDERS PAY THE PRICE.
WELL HAPPY SANDING

HA STEVE
I SEARCHED FOR A “HULL ONLY” DEAL FOR ABOUT 6-8 MONTHS. I FELT I WANTED TO START WITH THE HULL AND PUT NEW FROM THERE. MOST SEACRAFTS 20 PLUS YEARS OLD HAVE OLDER TRAILERS, LEANING POSTS, MOTORS, T-TOPS & ELECTRONICS ON THEM. I DIDN’T WANT TO BUY ALL THAT OLD STUFF JUST TO SELL OFF ALL OR MOST OF IT SO I COULD GET THE HULL. I FINALLY GOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR JUST THE HULL ON A 77 FOR $4,000. THE PREVIOUS OWNER KEPT THE REST AND USED IT OR SOLD IT OFF. I HAVE RE DID EVERYTHING SO FAR WITH NEW. DID THE DECK, GAS TANK FLOOR, CAP AND TRANSOM THE ONLY THING I DIDN’T HAVE TO DO WAS THE STRINGERS. PUT EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITH WEST EPOXY PROBABLY 10 GALLONS OF THE STUFF. NOW NEW 225 YAMAHA, NEW TRAILER, NEW ELECTRONICS, NEW LEANING POST, NEW T- TOP NEW GAS TANK, NEW, NEW, NEW. SO FAR I AM AT ABOUT $25,000 PROBABLY WILL FINISH OFF AT AROUND $27 TO $30 WHEN I GET DONE. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT JUST GOT A QUOTE ON A NEW SEACRAFT BOAT FROM OUTDOOR WORLD NO ELECTRONICS, NO MOTOR OR TRAILER. BUT I THINK T-TOP AND LEANING POST FOR $30,000. AS WE KNOW A NEW ONE WOULD COST APPROX $50 TO $60 GRAND NOW A DAYS WHEN YOU GET DONE. I AM IN AT ABOUT 50% WITH ALL NEW. I KNOW I COULD HAVE SHOPPED A USED RIG FOR ABOUT $20,000 BUT A TOTALLY RE DONE 77 WAS MORE WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WOULDN’T LIKE TO SPEND $20 AND THEN IN 6 MONTH OR SO KNOW I WOULD HAVE TO REBUILD A ENGINE OR FIND OUT THIS OR THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

I had my boat painted 2 years ago, used Awl grip and I really like it. It cleans off very easy light scrubbing.Iwas going to try to do it myself but I did'nt have the tools. I've seen boats that have been rolled and they look good, but you have to know what your doing. It cost me about 4,000.The guy did a great job but I would recommend him to no one,He took 4 months instead of the 1 month he promised. The guy the did my full transom in Stuart Fla.also awl grips.RS

HA REAL SNOOK
BELIEVE ME I’M NO PAINTER IT’S THE PREP WORK AND THE PAINT ITSELF THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. THE ONLY THING I EVER PAINTED WAS MY HOUSE A FEW TIMES. IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND SAND, SAND, SAND, PREP, PRIMER, MORE SANDING, PAINT, MORE SANDING, AND PAINT AGAIN IT COMES OUT PRETTY GOOD. I THINK THE IDEA OF PAINTING WITH A ROLLER AND BRUSH SPOOKS US ALL AT FIRST. BUT IF YOU CAN BE PATIENT AND START OFF SLOW YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF AND SAVE TONS OF $$$$ MY JOB WILL COST ABOUT $800 OR SO AND SAME ME $4-5 THOUSAND ON TOP OF THAT. YOU CAN PRACTICE ON SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T MAKE TO MUCH DIFFERENCE PAINT IT AND SEE HOW IT GOES. I STARTED PAINTING THE INSIDE OF HATCHES THEN THE OUT SIDE OF HATCHES, THEN THE CENTER CONSOLE THEN THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT AND THEN THE OUTSIDE. ALL GAVE ME MORE AN MORE EXPERIENCE AND CONFIDENCE IN “I CAN DO THIS” I EVEN HAD A GUY YESTER DAY STOP BY AND GIVE ME A QUOTE TO GEL COAT THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT ( A JOB I AM WILLING TO PAY SOME ONE ELSE TO DO ) NOW THIS GUY PAINTS AND GEL COATS FOR A LIVING AND HE DIDN’T HAVE ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT MY PAINT JOB. (I CONSIDERED THAT A COMPLEMENT) SHOOT EVEN MY WIFE GAVE ME A COMPLEMENT YESTERDAY. BELIEVE ME THAT’S AS RARE AS HEN’S TEETH. JUST REMEMBER IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE FINAL LAST COAT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SAND, SAND, SAND, IT SMOOTH THEN CALL UP THE PAINTER YOU KNOW AND ASK HIM HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO SHOOT THE LAST COAT ON THE BOAT. I BET IT WOULD BE MUCH.

OK GUYS THERE IS THE PROGRESS REPORT THIS WEEKEND I HAD GREAT WEATHER “I EVEN PRAYED OH GOD DON’T LET IT RAIN” ANYWAY I WAS ABLE TO PAINT THE FINAL COATS OF PAINT ON THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT BOTH THE GLOSSY PARTS AND THE NONSKID. IT CAME OUT PRETTY GOOD I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE JOB. I ALSO WAS ABLE TO PAINT THE FIRST COAT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOAT AND IT CAME OUT LOOKING GREAT. SO THIS WEEKEND I WILL BE ABLE TO SAND, SAND, SAND AND MAYBE ON SUNDAY BE ABLE TO PAINT THE FINAL COAT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOAT. I DECIDE TO HAVE THE BOTTOM GEL COATED AND WILL DROP OFF THE BOAT TO GET THAT DONE. AFTER CONSIDERING ALL FACTORS (FOR ME) GEL COATING THE BOTTOM MAKES A LOT OF SENSE ESPECIALLY WHEN SOME ONE ELSE IS GOING TO DO IT. I DON’T HAVE ANY MEANS TO TAKE THE BOAT OFF THE TRAILER TO WORK ON IT, AND AT A MARINA THEY WANT BOATS IN AND OUT NOT REALLY WANTING WEEKENDERS TYING UP THERE SPACE.

PROGRESS REPORT
I GOT MY BOTTOM GEL COATED LAST WEEK I HAD A GUY DO THE FAIRING AND THEN PUT 2 GAL OF GEL COAT ON THE BOTTOM. I NOW GOT A LOT OF SANDING TO DO. I ALSO PUT THE THIRD COAT OF PAINT ON THE CENTER CONSOL, AND PAINTED THE HULL WITH THE SECOND COAT. IT CAME OUT LOOKING VERY GOOD AND WAS PLANNING ON THAT BEING THE LAST COAT ON THE OUTSIDE UNTIL A CAT JUMPED UP AT THE TRANSOM AND OFF THE SIDE JUST AT THE WORST TIME POSSIBLE. I TRIED TO FIX IT BUT WITH TACKY PAINT THAT ONLY MAKES THINGS WORSE. NEEDLESS TO SAY I NOW HAVE DECIDED TO GIVE THE OUT SIDE OF THE BOAT A THIRD COAT. I HAD A PROFESSIONAL PAINTER COMPLEMENT ME ON HOW GOOD IT LOOKED, YOU REALLY CAN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE FROM ROLE AND TIP AND SPRAYING THE BOAT “IT’S THAT GOOD”. I HAVE STARTED PUTTING THINGS BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. I HAVE A DEADLINE OF JUNE THE FIRST TO GO TO THE KEYS AND I AM DOING THE MAJOR THINGS NOW. I WILL HAVE TO DO SOME OF THE COSMETIC WORK WHEN I GET BACK.

Fellow-Ship
You know I want to see Pictures.....I'll be getting close to having to make the leap of fate soon (painting).....unless I go the bracket route....which just may happen....(seems the most logical way to ensure my transom stays where its suppose to without rebuilding it....plus I get some deck space back!!!)

Jason's got me thinking about Gel coat...OH NO!!

Jason ... Where you able to do the gel coat work this weekend??? How did it come out!!!

HA SCOTT
YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT ON THOSE PICTURES FOR A WHILE I HAVE TAKEN SOME BUT UNTIL THE BOAT IS DONE I AM GOING TO HOLD OFF ON SENDING MORE PICTURES IN. I DID GET CONVERTED ON THE BOTTOM TO GEL COAT IT SEEMS TO MAKE MORE SENSE FOR A TRAILER GUY LIKE MYSELF TO RE GEL COAT INSTEAD OF PAINT. YOU CAN FIX ANYTHING EASIER AND IT MAKES A BETTER BARRIER COAT TO THE SALT WATER THEN PAINT. SCOTT YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT PAINTING YOUR BOAT OR NOT MINE CAME OUT NOT BAD AT ALL. THIS LAST COAT ON THE HULL REALLY LOOKS VERY GOOD I HAVE SEEN MORE ORANGE PEAL ON SPRAY JOBS THAT WHAT I GOT ON MY ROLLER, BRUSH METHOD IF IT WASN’T FOR THE CAT I DIDN’T EVEN NEED A THIRD COAT IT CAME OUT THAT GOOD. I THINK SPRAYING IS A GREAT METHOD OF PUTTING PAINT ON MORE FOR THE TIME FACTOR AND NOT THE QUALITY OF THE JOB. WHEN YOU SPRAY YOU PUT ALL THE COATS ON AT THE SAME TIME WITH ROLE TIP METHOD YOU HAVE TO SAND BETWEEN COATS. THE PREP WORK, PAINT AND A GOOD BRUSH REALLY MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

HA JASON THANKS AGAIN FOR REMINDING ME ABOUT GEL COAT UNTIL YOUR THREAD I CONSIDERED GEL COAT FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION AND FOR PATCH WORK BUT NEVER THOUGHT OF USING IT AS A RE GEL COATING THE ENTIRE BOTTOM.
