HA SCOTT
REMEMBER THAT YOU CANT USE GEL COAT OVER EPOXY THEY SAY IT WOULD WORK.
EVERYONE (PAINT MANUFACTURERS) HAS TOLD ME THAT YOU CANT KEEP A PAINTED (TOP COAT) BOAT IN THE WATER FOR MORE THAT ABOUT 10 DAYS TO 2 WEEKS. I KEEP MY BOAT ON THE TRAILER EXCEPT FOR 1 WEEK AT A TIME DOWN IN THE KEYS. I LIKE TO FISH OUT OF DIFFERENT PORTS DEPENDING ON WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE IS SOUTH FLORIDA. THAT’S ANOTHER REASON WHY I DIDN’T WANT A BOAT OVER 23’ LONG AND ONE ENGINE IT BECOMES TO MUCH LIKE WORK TO TRAILER A BOAT TO BIG.
THIS WEEK I CUT THE HOLE TO FIT THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL OUT OF THE CENTER CONSOL, I MADE A HATCH COVER WITH STAR BRIGHT FOR THAT LITTLE PERSONAL ITEMS HATCH IN THE CENTER CONSOLE CLOSE TO THE WHEEL. I BOUGHT A NEW HYDRAULIC PISTON UNIT KIT THAT WILL ATTACH TO THE NEW 225 I AM GETTING. TODAY I AM GOING TO BENNETT TRIM TAPS TO PICK UP THAT PLASTIC COVER THAT SCREWS ONTO THE TOP OF THE TRIM TAP SENDING UNIT. THIS WEEKEND MORE FAIRING AND SANDING THE INSIDE. I HOPE THIS IS THE LAST WEEKEND OF THAT. MAYBE SUNDAY I WILL BE PRIMING THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT (I HOPE). THIS NEXT WEEK I GO TO PUT $$$ ON THE NEW 225 AND PICK UP THE HARNESS AND GAGES WITH A BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF. FUN, FUN, FUN, SO MUCH FUN AND STILL NOW 10 MONTHS OF FUN BOATING AND NOT BEING IN THE WATER YET. I HAVE RESERVATIONS TO GO DOWN TO THE KEYS THE FIRST WEEK IN JUNE I HOPE I WILL BE DONE BY THEN.

HA JOHN R
YOU WILL HAVE TO TALK TO TRAYDER OR SOMEONE ELSE ON RE GEL COATING. I DON’T KNOW TO MUCH ABOUT THAT. I AM SURE THAT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO GO ON THE BOTTOM BUT I WILL BE PAINTING MINE. I GUESS IT IS THE SAME PROCESS AS THOSE LITTLE SPOT GEL COAT KITS YOU CAN BUY BUT ON A MUCH BIGGER SCALE. SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF SANDING TO ME AND IF YOU HAVE READ MY POSTS YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE SANDING.

That 's what I thought about the paint on the bottom....I'll be keeping mine in the water so I guess I'll strip off the old bottom paint and epoxy seal it then re coat it.

Sounds like your moving right along....did you relocate the steering wheel to the center of the helm or did you leave it as it was originally?

HA SCOTT
I RELOCATED IT TO THE CENTER ON THE CONSOL JUST RIGHT OF THAT LITTLE UTILITY BOX HATCH WHERE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. ON MY BOAT BEFORE THE PROJECT BEGAN THE WHEEL AS LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CONSOL AND THE BINNACLE WAS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE I KNEW THAT WOULD NEVER DO FOR ME LIKE DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD.

I FIGURED I WOULD GIVE YOU GUYS A UPDATE ON THE WORK. I FINALLY FINISHED THE FAIRING OF THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT. NEXT WEEKEND I WILL PRIME THE INSIDE AND SAND IT SMOOTH. THE OUTSIDE OF THE HULL HAS ABOUT ONE DAY OF FAIRING AND SANDING AND THE BOTTOM HAS A FEW DAYS OF WORK ON IT BEFORE I PRIME IT. ALL IN ALL FAIRING HELL IS COMING TO A END. I THINK THE INSIDE IS THE WORST BECAUSE OF ALL THE HAND SANDING TO GET INTO ALL THOSE TIGHT CORNERS. I FINALLY FINISHED THAT ROLE OF FILM SO I WILL BE SENDING SOME PICTURES ALONE SOON.

Hi Fellow-Ship
Sounds like your picking up a head of steam!!! Thats great.....Are you just sanding/fairing in prep for your primer coats ... or are your truly fairing new epoxy work and what kinda work are you doing to the bottom??

In response to your post from last week about the helm....I was thinking of putting the wheel all the way over to port ( in place of the junk collector box ) like you said I'm not use to running the boat esp. the throttle from that side ... but I dont know if I want to do all of that additional fiberglass work ... not like I dont have enough to do now!!......plus that little box is pretty handy to put stuff in..

Cant wait to see progress Pictures....and on a side note ..If you have a few of the transom rebuild could you email them to me???

Thanks
Scott

HA SCOTT
ALL THE FAIRING THAT I HAVE BEEN DOING LATELY HAS BEEN FOR THE PRIMER COAT. NOW THAT’S ALL DONE THE PRIMER WILL GO ON THIS WEEKEND. ON THE HULL AND THE BOTTOM. I JUST WANT IT TO COME OUT LOOKING AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE AND FAIRING IS THE THING TO COVER UP ALL THOSE LITTLE DINGS. THE BOTTOM WILL NEED TO BE SANDED SOME WITH 150 GRIT PAPER TO GET IT SMOTHER. THE BOAT HAD BOTTOM PAINT ON IT THAT I HAD SODA BLASTED OFF. IT LEFT SOME PITTING THAT WILL NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. THIS MORNING BEFORE WORK I STARTED SANDING THOSE HATCHES AND CENTER CONSOL TO RUFF THEM UP FOR THE NEXT COAT OF PAINT. THAT SHOULD THE LAST COAT FOR SOME OF MY WORK. WE WILL SEE.
AS FOR YOUR CENTER CONSOL I LIKE THAT LITTLE JUNK BOX I WANT TO KEEP IT IN TACK. I JUST MAID A NEW TOP FOR IT AND IT LOOKS PRETTY GOOD, THE WHEEL IS IN THE MIDDLE AND THE BINNACLE TO THE RIGHT ONE THING FOR SURE I WILL STAY PRETTY DRY IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT CONSOL.

Hi Fellow-Ship
Glad to hear that you are primarily doing prep work for priming.....and not trying to GRIND down epoxy. What tools are you having the best luck with doing all the fairing work??

How fresh was the paint on the bottom when you had it blasted....mine is coming off rather easily by scraping....then I'll hit it with the random orbit to clean it up all the way....was also thinking of using that PEEL AWAY product...I've tried the Interlux Interstrip 299 on the boot stripe and it works well ... Ihave heard that the Peel Away works the best.....

Your Pitting ... I'm assuming it was osmotic blistering?? Thats why I dont know if I want to blast the bottom if the paint is coming off easy for me...there are no signs of blisters but on a 25 year old hull I'm sure its going to pock up somewhat.

Hey how did the hatches look after the first coat of paint??

And yes I haven’t figured out how to handle the helm….I like the Idea of being on the center line of the boat and hiding behind that nice console….but I think my “first mate” or as she believes, the Captain would have something to say about me hogging the area behind the console….esp up here in the NE….one good wave and your not only wet but frozen….but then again I’m sure she will make it out a couple of times and that be it for the season..
