I repowerd my 20' Grady CC with an '02 2-stroke carbed Merc. 150 two seasons ago. This motor is phenomenal. While it certainly doesn't get the fuel economy of the 4-strokes, it's not inefficient by any means. Fully loaded, I'm pushing nearly 4000 lbs. through the water. WOT gives me almost 40 mph at 5400, but I try to cruise at 4000. This gets me about 28 mph and I'm burning 8 gal/hr per my Navman.

Like I said, it's not as efficient as a four stroke...but I paid less than $6500 for it. That included a new binnacle control, wiring harness and throttle and shift cables.

Just another option.

I have a Merc 225 Optimax 25" shaft and transom on a 71 20' custom built boat. I like the extra power to carry extra weight if you need to and you can cruise at lower RPM's to obtain good cruising speeds, also its fun to hall arse on a flat calm Biscayne Bay early in the morning.

'72 Seafari. Currently running a '92 Merc 150 reman'd to roughly 200 hp. Fuel economy is not that good - nearly 9 gph at cruise, and over 14 at WOT. Normal top speed is about 48-49 Statute mph, but running downwind light on fuel in a moderate chop I once got up over 50....Woooohaaaa! Suck a 43 gal tank dry in no time!
If you're getting fuel economy of under 6 gph at cruise, Praise God!
I gotta wait a couple more years before I replace my hybrid 150/200 Merc. (Mostly '92 Xr4 150 - Intake, carbs and electricals from '02 200 carb motor)
