SPENT SOME TIME CHECKING OUT MY PAINT JOB FROM YESTERDAY. THIS IS MY CONCLUSION.
FIRST OFF IF YOU USE TOO COURSE OF SAND PAPER IT WILL SHOW THROUGH ON THE FIRST COAT. I DON’T THING IT WILL SHOW AFTER THE SECOND BUT I WILL SAND WITH ETHER 220 OR 320 BETWEEN COATS OF TOP COAT FOR NOW ON. SECOND DUST IS A REAL PROBLEM FOR NOW ON JUST FOAM ROLLER COVERS. THE FIRST 1 OR 2 PIECES I DID HAD DUST SPECKS ALL OVER IT. THE LAST 2 PIECES HAD VERY LITTLE DUST ON THEM. I CAN ONLY ATTRIBUTE THAT TO THE SHORT NAP ROLLER COVERS THEY MUST BE DROPPING SPECKS EVEN THOUGH I TOOK PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT IT.
THIRD WHEN I BRUSHED (WITH A GOOD BRUSH) THERE WERE SOME STREAKS FROM THE BRUSH BUT AFTER THE DRYING TIME NO STREAKS AT ALL. YOU CANT TELL THAT IT WAS NOT SPRAYED (EXCEPT FOR THE DUST ON THE FIRST TWO) PIECES. ONE MORE THING I DON’T KNOW ABOUT AWLGRIP BUT STERLING DID NOT RUN. THE CENTER CONSOL HAD NO RUNS ON THE ENTIRE THING, I FELT IF I WAS GOING TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH RUNNING THAT WOULD BE THE PIECE THAT IT WOULD SHOW UP. NOTHING NO STREAKS AND NO RUNS THANK GOT FOR THAT. ALL IN ALL PAINTING THE WHOLE BOAT WITH A TWO PART PAINT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO IF YOU DON’T SKIP ANY STEPS AND TAKE YOUR TIME AND KEEP YOU JOB OUT OF THE WIND.

Glad to hear things went well!!

What grit sand paper did you use and at what point in the process ?(fairing, after the primer etc.)..Can you reduce the paint to make it flow better during brushing....although you said it leveled out after it sat and cured .. so I guess you dont want to mess with that...

Sounds like foam rollers all the way!!!!! Very Glad to hear you got the mirror finish!!!I've seen boats that leave something to be desired after the roll and tip process....you see the true meaning of the "orange peel surface"

I FIRST USED 60 GRIT TO DO THE RUFF WORK THEN MOVED TO 150 GRIT ON THE PRIMER HAND AND BLOCK SANDING. I THINK IF I SAND THE FIRST TOP COAT WITH 220 OR 320 IT WILL LOOK JUST FINE BUT UNTIL I TRY IT JUST A GUESS FOR NOW. WITH STERLING YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT REDUCING IT AFTER YOU START IT STAYS AT THE SAME CONSISTENCY FOR A LONG TIME. THEY SAY WITH AWLGRIP THAT IS A ISSUE. WHEN I DO THE HULL I WILL BE READY TO AT LEAST CLEAN THE BRUSH WITH THINNER AS I GO IF NEEDED.

Thanks for the reply.....I contacted Sterling Paints today and they sound like the paint I want to go with...sounds more forgiving than Awlgrip and easier to attain the high gloss finish. and It sounds like you are confirming that. Paint is suppose to be as tough as the others and the primer can be put on and left in the sun and it will suffer no UV damage (a plus in my case) Just needs a light sanding right prior to topcoating.

Also there customer/technical support is great...very willing to give any and all info to make the job come out right....The only downside is I think the paint is more expensive then Awlgrip.....but hey if it works and the finish comes out looking professionally done ... so be it!!!!! Oh yeah they are sending application guides color charts and actual color chip samples of the hull color and the topside colors I'm thinking about [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

STERLING’S TEC SUPPORT IS VERY HELPFUL. I HARDLY COULD GET HIM OFF THE PHONE WHEN I TALKED TO HIM. I DON’T WANT TO PUT DOWN AWLGRIP BUT I FEEL REAL GOOD ABOUT WORKING WITH STERLING. IT GIVES ME CONFIDENCE ABOUT PAINTING THE ROLE AND TIP METHOD, SO EVEN IF IT ISN’T ANY BETTER BUT I THING IT IS BETTER USING THEIR BRAND THEN IT WORKS. I KNOW IF THE BOAT WAS BEING SPRAYED I WOULD WANT IT SPRAYED WITH AWLGRIP.

How's the paint job coming??
Have you been able to recoat and how are you doing the nonskid (you going to mix it in the topcoat and roll or you going to paint then shake and sift the non skid onto the tacky surface??? Hope its gong well for you [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

LOOK UNDER THE HEADING OF FRUSTRATED WITH FAIRING AND YOU WILL NOW WHAT I DID THIS WEEKEND. BUT I DID GO OUT AND BUY $621.00 OF STERLING PAINT FRIDAY AND HAVE LOOKED AT THE STASH OF CANS ON OCCASION. I GUESS I AM COMMITTED TO THE PAINT JOB NOW AND ONE WAY OR ANOTHER I WILL BE HAPPY EITHER HAPPY WITH THE MONEY I SAVED OR HAPPY WITH THE MONEY I SAVED AND THE JOB I DID MYSELF TIME WILL TELL. I BOUGHT THE FINE NON SKID FROM STERLING. I WILL PUT ONE LAYER OF PAINT ON FIRST THEN TAPE THE NOW SKID AREA THEN PUT THE NON SKID (NOT SURE HOW YET) AND THEN ANOTHER COAT OF PAINT OVER THE ENTIRE JOB. I BOUGHT ENOUGH PAINT TO DO THE INSIDE AND OUT (I THINK) GOING WITH SNOW WHITE IN THE INSIDE AND ON THE BOTTOM OF HULL AND WITH BLUE MIST ON THE SIDES OF THE HULL.

I WILL KEEP THE BOAT ON THE TRAILER FOR MOST OF THE PAINTING PROJECT. I WILL HAVE TO DO SOMETHING (NOT SURE WHAT YET) WHEN I DO UNDER THE BUNKS OF THE TRAILER. MOST OF THE BOTTOM WILL HAVE ENOUGH ACCESS FOR ME TO WORK ON AND I HAVE TALKED TO A GUY THAT JUST MOVED THE BUNKS IN CLOSER TO THE CENTER LINE THEN DID THE AREA. WE WILL SEE WHEN I GET THERE. ONE THING YOU WANT TO DO IS WAIT 2 WEEKS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING OR YOU COULD DAMAGE THE PAINT MOVING THE BOAT ON THE TRAILER.
OH BY THE WAY MOST OF MY DECK HAS BEEN SANDED THIS LAST WEEKEND WAS THE CHANNELS AND ALL 90 DEGREE TURNS PLUS INSIDE HATCHES AND SUCH LIKE. THIS WAS NOT MY FAVORITE THING TO DO. I AM GLAD I HAVE 5 DAYS BEFORE I GO BACK TO WORKING ON THE BOAT. I HAD ALL THE FUN I WANTED THIS LAST WEEKEND.

Sorry to hear about your sanding woes !!! You scared me there for a moment I thought you had problems with sanding the first coat of paint [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img]
I'm sure its going to look awesome when all is said and done. The color combo you picked out sounds real nice ... I've been thinking about Gel coat but Trayders troubles has me thinking to stay the paint route.. that being said I cant wait to get the color charts and color chips that Sterling is sending off to me...If I were to paint the hull this year.....which my original gel coat isnt in that bad a shape and its colored to boot (same color as Hammers and Tryaders 20's ) I dont know what color I'd go with....I've been thinking a real pale yellow/green or blue bottom....Topsides will be white....

Are you keeping the boat on the trailer....since your painting the bottom??

I'm sorry..I was unclear in my previous post...my mistake [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img] ....what I meant about keeping it on the trailer was ..Will the boat stay in the water when it is finished or are you going to trailer it....this all leading to...is the paint good for underwater use??
Any more progress this week??

Received some great color chips from Sterling!!! some really nice custom blended colors !! cant wait to start ... unless Tryader converts me into a Gel Coat guy!!!
