These guys know what they are talking about. If you polled the members who've done a rebuild/restoration, agreement would be unanimous. Very few decades-old boats have the "bones" to justify that kind of time/money/effort.

I did a similar thing to a lapstrake skiff and I enjoyed it, but it cost almost $1500 to redo in 2001. That was a smaller project than yours. For the number of hours I spent working on it I would have been better off spending the time working a second job at walmart or best buy and buying a seacraft But I learned a ton and it was a lot of fun to make a "custom boat" hahahaha
If you have a freshwater motor . . . hang onto it and all the rigging. I run a 86 Merc on my boat and ran a 1979 powerhead before that. |

It was a 14ft starcraft fiberglass . . . before I cut into it Materials in 2001 were much less expensive, so maybe 2k now and a dozen weekends. Last edited by Bigshrimpin; 08-28-2012 at 09:01 PM. |

Words of experience talking right there.. Tough to hear, true to the last drop. Must be loved in a major way to justify the expense and commitment of time and labor.. Although I personally think there are a lot of different boats worthy of a rebuild. Next project might be a go fast or a cat, to each his own. I am still in love with my Wellcraft, couldn't afford not to be..
