Those Yammies are great engines even though they are 24 years old. However, as others have said, they are 24 years old so expect repairs even with such low hours. Sounds like a nice set-up overall and based on the sea conditions you described, shouldn't be an issue for the 23. And your new truck is more than adequate towing that rig long distances especially if the trailer has functioning brakes.

I live in southern California (Ventura county) and will be mostly running the boat to the channel islands

The channels sound great but you'll need a transom for sure if your towing it on the SR-101/SR-23 interchange in Thousand Oaks

Be sure to check the shift shafts on those engines,It was the achilles heal of the earlier Yamaha's and changing them means removing the powerhead.

Sceptre beat me too it . . . the 2.6L yamaha's are good motors. The big problem with the 92 yamaha and earlier v6 150 - 200 was the shift shaft and powerhead removal to fix the shift shaft once the shift shaft rotted out. Plenty of information on this online. Steering arms can rot out too.

Am I correct that anything covering the transom is a possible sign of a weak transom? Maybe I'm paranoid because my 84-year-old dad's recent purchase (I never saw the boat until AFTER the purchase) of a 20' SF had diamond-plate covering the transom, and...well...turned out the transom was shot.
Looking forward to photos...and maybe a better description of how the transom is covered...

I am really looking froward to being able to call it mine, I am meeting with the owner tomorrow to give him a deposit. My father (a marine electrician) has installed basically every bit of electronics on this boat and many of his other boats for the last 25 years! I myself have known and helped maintain the boat for 5. He knows how much I love the boat, and has offered to sell it to me and me only! Being a college student and kinda strapped for cash, this mite be a bit of a challenge, but it Will be MINE! Anybody know any good banks to rob???? And Hermit, i am taking the boat out over the weekend will do my best to get pics and specs on the solar panel system (that my dad installed). Much Sea Craft love to all! I will keep everybody posted on the purchase. Once again HUGE thanks to everyone, i cannot wait to be part of (the Family).
