Default Mercury 2.5L Oil Injection Failure

I took this video this morning. Here is a typical example of a Mercury 2.5L oil injection failure. This is a 2.5L 200hp efi with 6 perfect cylinders (bore scope and leakdown) and no issues except for a stripped oil injection worm gear. The original owner shut it down when the alarm sounded and got towed in.

A blank off plug should be the first thing you buy if you own one of these with the plastic gears. Premix is the way to go for this era outboard for sure. I got an 98 that had a electric/mechanical oil pump conversion kit that was added to it by the previous owner. That would be better than the plastic gear but I don't even trust it. Hard not to premix. Then you know its getting oil for sure...
