Baitwell hatch help
Finally have the newly purchased 1984 23' CC at home were it belongs. Before the new Yam F250BTXR is installed, I want to do some work on it. Besides this baitwell needing some stiffening up, I am amazed how well built this one is. Everthing else is in very good condition; have been looking for 6 months for the right one (even though not a potter built) and finally found her.
Anyway, I need some advise on stiffening up the baitwell hatch. It seems very weak when stood upon (flexing). Looking from the underside of the hatch you can see that the glassed over wood doesn't run out to the edge of the hatch so it creates weakness were the wood stops. Question is should I cut the well from the hatch then redo the wood to the outer edges of the hatch or could I just add extra pieces of wood around the edges where needed and glass in place? There will be a lot of weight from water in the well plus human weight standing on top,so it must be strong. This is my first time trying to add images so bear with me if I have to become self educated. In the next week I will be adding more eye candy while the rebirth is taking place. Thanks for the help and glad to be back involved with this excellent site, Mark (image)http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...hatch72res.jpg (/image) (image)http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...image72res.jpg (/image) (image)http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...image72res.jpg (/image) (image)http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...image72res.jpg |

Re: Baitwell hatch help
I would do what you can on the top to help stiffen it up. But for me I would build a deck in the bilge for the bottom of the bait well to rest upon so most of the weight would be supported by the deck in the bilge instead of the well hanging in the air. Thats how I did my deck and I get no flex. My livewell now is a support for my deck instead of my deck being the only support for my livewell.

Re: Baitwell hatch help
Thanks Capt. Chuck for the help with the images, Had very little time this afternoon trying to figure it out. Can you tell me after looking at my post as to what I might have been doing wrong?

Re: Baitwell hatch help
Building support in the bilge for the well to sit on is a great idea. That is probably the only thing that will support all that weight when the well is full of water. I was going to mount my gas tank like it was before(just screwed in at the flange) but I think I will put a cross member under the tank coffin to help support it even more. Great idea FellowShip.
