Outboard brackets
I am converting a 76 I/O and was wondering if there is any particular specifications I need to know when converting to an outboard.
Any suggestions on single or twin outboards (4 stroke application) |

Re: Outboard brackets
Assuming a 23SF-- IMHO, the 250 Zuke is the cheapest new single 4-stroke, while any 250 2 or 4stroke will be a good match. 300 Zuke is ideal in a single. Twins need a full floatation bracket see the hermco/seamark bracket in the search feature of CSC. The 4 cylinder 130 etecs(coming soon) or 115/140 zukes are great light twins. Many people go 150/175/200 twins, and weight should be ok on 2 stroke, and more stern heavy on 4 strokes. BE SURE TO PUT KNEES on the transom if you haven't thought of that yet. My outdrive conversion to bracketed outboards didn't put knee braces in, and they are needed.

Re: Outboard brackets
If it's a 20, try to minimize motor weight and bracket setback. About the only 4-stroke I'd consider for a 20 is the 140 Zuke. All the others are ~500 lbs wet weight (cowling plus fluids), which IMHO is too much for a hull designed for a 300 lb motor. The Merc Optimax and E-Tec are also competitive on fuel consumption, have more mid-range torque, and the E-Tec is QUIETER than 4-strokes at 30 mph cruise because it doesn't have to be wound up so much. If you PM me your e-mail address, I can send you a spreadsheet I put together comparing all the 150 hp motors. Denny
