Yami HPDI v. 4 Stroke ?

What is the deal with the HPDI engine? I know its lighter then the 4, has it held up well, any negs with these? I have noticed some Reg 26's priced well, tend to be older boats say 1996 with the HPDI as a recent repower say 2002. Is there a reason to avoid the HPDI ? I assume the 4 stroke gets better fuel economy but is heavier. I run a IB so not to up on these engine trade offs.

friends boat i fish offshore has twin 200 hp hpdi's on it (25 contender). he got them new 2 yrs ago or so and loves them. for a day of fishing (60 miles out+60 back+ trolling all day) we generally burn a little less than 100 gallons. thats running at 4000 rpms give or take. its kind of overpower for that boat but it runs great. just my .02, a lot of the guys on here know a ton about motors...

THe only issues seem to be maintaining the fuel filters, there are a couple and the main culprit seems to be the VST filter, when they have problems that seems to be it. Their 4 strokes are not nearly as strong with equal HP the HDPI are strong

The 200's have been one of Yamaha's best motors. I have heard that the 250 and 300's were not in line with Yamaha's reliability and I believe are priced accordingly, but if they had all the updates done.........If the oil line was not bleed properly on the 250 the#1 cylinders were leaning out and blowing.

Good points snookerd - they recently had an oil pump recall and if all the updates were done probably not bad motors as they got trashed pretty good when released. They had some over oiling issues also, those should be taken care of certainly after the pump recall and might be had for a decent price

In that size I have a line on a couple 07 Etec's in 200 and 225 that are ready to be moved as well - IM me if you want.

The 200 HDPI is one of Yamaha's best engines made. You see a-lot of 26 Regs with those motors because the are the best match for the boat. The boat wasn't designed for 4 strokes and pre-2001 had the older bracket that did not have the added floatation for the heavy 4's. The boat is balanced better with the HDPI even with the new bracket.

Currently, I have twin 200 OX66's that I baby and plan to drive for a long time. When they go I will probably go with HPDI's. They are lighter and more fuel efficent than the OX66's. Aalso, they will be a lot cheaper (as opposed to something like e-TECS.)

By the way Jeff, I think that you have blown by me in your boat several times this year. Once time I think that I was sea bassing on Sandy Hook Reef.

You're not the only one though. Two weeks ago Stoney and his buddy acted like total strangers out on the Garden State North reef. And the weird thing was Stoney's buddy was wearing one of the CSC shirts that I made in 2005.
