Default using starboard to close transom notch?

Hi

Has anyone closed in their transom notch on a 1976 18ft using starboard? I am switching out my scuppers to the ping pong style and would also like to limit the amount of water that comes over the 20" transom. I don't have the money to close the transom and replace my motor so I am doing what I can. Looking for some ideas or better yet pictures of doors/gates installed on either side of an engine made of starboard and is removable.

Thanks
Tim
