Raw water pickup location ?

I want to install a washdown/livewell system, and was wondering where you guys have your pickup located.I was going to put a bronze pickup through the bottom, but don't want to cause any turbulance that will affect the prop, how far off center do I have to be to ensure no interference, or is there a better way?
