Joel,
I'll be priming the boat soon; could you tell me more about the
QUANTUM45 Series Epoxy Surfacing Primer - Off White Base (GAL)
and QUANTUM45 Series High Build Epoxy Activator (GAL)?
Can it be rolled on and sanded?
I faired the hull fairly smooth but it still needs some slight leveling at the glass seam edges where I tabbed them in, and I'm hoping the primer would finish it.

Also what would you recommend to epoxy barrier coat the bottom? I'm also probably going to add bottom paint.

Hi Dave,

The primer comes in two color bases, white and grey. There are two catalysts, finish and high build. The high build is very high build, and it will turn the white bass to a beige color. The high build could almost be called fairing primer. You can do multiple coats one after another to fill what you need, just be sure not to exceed the maximum film thickness while wet or you can get solvent entrapment (too much primer at once and the solvents in the first coat cant escape), but you have to go pretty thick to have to worry about that.

It can be rolled or sprayed, I have done both and it just depends the area Im coating which one I do.

Actually Im hoping to have time to spray my entire 26 hull with it today if I have time.

Im sure you will like the primer. Be sure to sand it within a few days or else it get HARD

So if the primer is an epoxy, is the Topcoat also an epoxy?

Your site states that Quantum99 is not to be used below the waterline.

What do you recommend to paint the hull bottom- with and without anti fouling paint?

top coat is a polyurethane. Its fine below the waterline, but not for permanent immersion (same as all the other topcoats Alexseal, Awlgrip, Imron, etc)

If the boat will not live in the water permanently then I would use the EMC quantum everywhere (thats what Im doing on my current boat), if its going to stay int he water more than a couple weeks, you will need bottom paint anyway and no need to use the quantum if its just going to be covered up,

Thanks Joel!
So if I decide to add bottom paint, should I coat over the original gel coat, or do I need an epoxy barrier coat?

Since I added two extra feet to the back of the hull, I need to paint over that new glass anyway.

You can paint right over gelcoat, but to hide that transition to the new extension you should use some high build primer.
