Through transom scuppers

I will more than likely be redoing the entire transom this winter and was thinking about closing up the through hull scupers and having regular scuppers (like larger boats have) go out the transom. Is this a problem? I don't want to have to do anything to the deck in order to make the water drain. I am keeping the drainage channels on the deck and would think the water would still drain aft and out the transom scuppers even while sitting on the mooring. There has to be more to this as i don't think i have seen this modification. Maybe it has been, i don't know for sure. Does anyone see any problem with this? Thanks for any info.

I don't mean ball type scuppers. I am talking basically 2 holes at deck level that run straight aft through the transom. Is the deck to waterline too low for this. Basicly, look at any lobster boat or sport fisher scuppers and they simply have two holes, 1 each side at deck level that allow water out the transom.

Hey Buddy- my old mako inboard had exactly that 2- 1 1/2" holes going straight thru the transom- im not sure where the deck /waterline lines up on the seacraft though. I have ythought about it myself- same kind of flap like is on the exhaust and a large enough scupper to move some water out if you really need too. keep us "in the know",lol- see ya- craig

I need to figure this out myself. I think my stbd through deck is leaking; always a little water on that side but not port!

Your previous posts have indicated to me that you keep your hull in the water, correct? If so, take a few measurements to figure out the relationship between the spot(s) on the inside face of the tramsom where you would drill the holes and the scum line along the outside face of the transom.

I have the 23 outboard and keep it on a trailer most of the time. So what I say maybe not be a perfect answer as much as it is my opinion. Anyway I would Never have through the transom scuppers with out a check valve type device to prevent water from back flushing and coming into the boat. SeaCraft hulls have a low deck design and to not use either a good flap or ball scupper valve is juggling with fire and dynamite. All it would take is one bad experience to ruin what you got for a long time and lots of money to fix a avoidable mistake.

I'm in the middle of transom/floor replacement in my 23. We've put in large through transom scuppers BUT the floor will also end up being raised about 2".

Elihja(sp)- i just checked on my transom and if you see the four bolts on the portside of the transom, my deck is approximately even with the bottom two (bolts in the picture)- based on the waterline with just me in the boat , if your scuppers go from bottom bolts up there should be know problems with locating them straight thru the stern hatch and out thru the transom. Ill find that picture of my old boat that had the flaps on the outside of the transom- craig

Went out the back last spring wiih TH flaper succpers, used pool pipe flex pvc works well be careful cause of angle of transom with TH lay out Mine is 1 half inch above chanel sits above wter with 250 suk septer
