Why did the CG let the boat drift away?
Sea Tow offered to tow her back in... |

Sandy, The Coast Guard no longer tows vessels. They have many more pressing issues that must be addressed, monitored and acted upon such as 1) a wave runner causing a ripple in a "No Wake Zone" 2) a fisherman in possession of a gut hooked grouper which is 1/4" undersized or 3) a dive boat not having a throwable floatation device. How in the heck are you going to "spring into action" with flashing lights and sirens, to take care of these matters when you'er messing around towing a 20' "hazard to navigation"? They do monitor channel 16 though. Just remember, it's not your father's Coast Guard any more. Also please be advised that channel 16 is for "hailing and distress" only - so don't be talking about where to anchor the Race Boat at Peanut Island on channel 16 - even on low power! |

CG said stand on and we will secure. CG said they could not anchor in 390? Set adrift? Called salvage. Salvage had no signal from locating beacon? My ass. |

The whole story seems bizarre to me. I understand the CG not wanting to take precious time away from the search mission, but somebody must have dropped the ball in getting the boat, a valuable piece of evidence in the investigation. The investigation, as I understand, rests with the FWC, not the CG.
Now the boat mysteriously re-appears after the massive search ended a long time ago (ironically near Bermuda). Now, local news is reporting that there is a dispute as to whether investigators can look into getting information from a phone found in the boat. Why is that? |

The article I read said the beacon the CG attached to the boat didn't work and the tow company never located the boat.
