36 is great for 23 with a 2.5l opti 150 and Ttop. What prop are you running?

I got a 1987 175 2.4l powerhead on a 2001 mid section on my 23. I ran a 15 mirage and it'd hit 39/40. 17 enertia can hit 42/43 cruises nice at 32/33mph.

SHRIMPIN - Over 40 mph with a 150 on 23 Seacraft is quite impressive.
I would not have figured that fast.
Must be a good straight hull, engine height correct, best prop, trim, and hull is not waterlogged.

The two times I switched from a 150 to 200 on different boats, I gained about 8 mph.
Granted, there are other factors that affect speed.

Using the same factor on a Seacraft, your 23 would run approx. 50 with 200, and maybe 60 with 300 Yami or such.
Nice, I'll take the 300 !!!!!

BGreene - The powerhead is 1987 175hp vertical reed 2.4L merc . . . My boat doesn't have bottom paint. I really think the new 3.0L 150 merc 4 stroke would be a good match for the 23. I just wish i could try before shelling out 10.5k.

Might yield high mpg too. Saw over in Europe, or the UK where boaters use the smallest possible outboard power, likely to reduce fuel use. Here though, we tend to go with a " more than needed " approach, and it works out well. I didn't need to move from 150 to 200 on my V21 boat, but I like it!

Also, at around 3,800 rpm the big block Etec 200 HO purrs like it's barely running, and fuel use is minimal.
I like the idea of 250-300hp on Seacraft 23 to generate high cruising speed when conditions are good and not push the motor. Maybe it's overkill.

Sweet set up.. I have a 1974 23 that had a 1998 200 Johnson ocean runner on it. Boat going through complete restoration from stringers up getting close to being complete. I'm Putting a 2012 300 yamaha 30" on her and should run real well!! Good luck and enjoy!!
