SeaCraft & Sam Ervin Custom Boats on my title.Y?
I have a title to an 1978 18' SeaCraft that has Sam Ervin Custom Boats on the title for manufacturing. I Googled both names together and it said that Sam Ervin owned it at one point. I thought till 1980 that it was a Potter boat?

Re: SeaCraft & Sam Ervin Custom Boats on my title.Y?
Although you own a SeaCraft boat the title says something different. So legally speaking thats not a Seacraft. In Florida that would be considered a Home built boat. This Could affect the selling price when you sell her one day. Trying to explain it to a buyer could be a deal breaker.
40 years ago I bough a home built boat turned out it was a stolen boat that someone had changed the numbers on and sold to me. I will never do that again. FellowShip . Just for the Grins Official 23 SF Antique Classic SeaCraft Owner |

Re: SeaCraft & Sam Ervin Custom Boats on my title.Y?
That was my initial thought but, the first three letters on the title and the VIN are SEC indicating a Potter built hull. Sam Ervin at some point owned Seacraft in addition to fifty or so boat companies throughout the US if I'm interpreting the information correctly.

Re: SeaCraft & Sam Ervin Custom Boats on my title.Y?
Your 18 is no doubt a SeaCraft from the Potter era. If on your title it says Sam Ervin Custom Boats that is merely a typical State DMV blunder. I am not aware of Sam Ervin having owned SeaCraft but maybe so. I have seen "SEC" listed as Sam Ervin Custom Boats Mfg code after 1988.
Here is my take (what I learned on CSI ) : SEC was CG manufacturing code for Seacraft until early '80s when it split sold or went temporarily out of business. Perhaps the code became available and was assigned to Sam Ervin Custom boats of HI in 1988. At some point during a title transfer process the agent looked up SEC in their DMV book and typed in what the publication said. Book was likely published after 1989. Human error. I am human, therefore, I err... I would take that info down to DMV or AAA and get it corrected to read Seacraft. My Seavette had logical typos all over the title. U instead of V, etc...

Old post but I just registered my 1978 is MS and they put the make as Sam Ervin Custom Boats. So I called to get it corrected and they told me that Sam must have bought seacraft at a later date. I want mine to say SeaCraft!
