Resin Question??
Ok, I did my transom lay-up with marine plywood with some left over epoxy resin that I had.....now I'm out of epoxy and still haven't installed the transom yet and need opinions of what type of resin should I use. Again, remember I'm a fiberglass novice and will be finishing my transom and then I will be redoing the floor. I'm kinda leaning towards vinyl-ester .....I'm on a strict budget but want the best bang for my buck.....ideas/opinions are needed and appreciated!!

Re: Resin Question??
Rule of thumb is that you can epoxy over polyester but you cannot put polyester over epoxy. Vinylester I'm not sure about but since vinylester and polyester are compatible I would not want to take the chance of using vinylester. You should finish the transom in epoxy since that is what you started with.

Re: Resin Question??
Strick is correct. Stay with Epoxy plus it holds much better to your existing hull. For me all repair work use Epoxy and for new construction pieces you have a choice.

Re: Resin Question??
As mentioned, stay with the Epoxy.Polyester and vinylester resins will not cure properly over an epoxy resin surface.
Just for an experiment,I tried it with some polyester and vinylester resins, and they both remained gummy when applied over the epoxy. The bond was bad,and it never completely cured.Don't risk it.

Re: Resin Question??
Epoxy is a superior product one of it's best attributes IMO is the fact that you have so much working time so wood really wicks it up nicely. Just make sure it's nicely wetted out around all wood you don't want dry spots or voids.
