engine power
I recently purchased a 18SF of 1975 vintage and love it except for the low transom, which some day when I am rich will get updated. I have a mid '90's mariner on it now, with the hope some day to upgrade to a 4-stroke for some obvious reasons when the engine is replaced too. Does anyone have a recommendation? Also, I am concerned with weight of the new engine too. I found the current one is 350lbs. Thanks all for your help in advance.

Re: engine power
There are a ton of threads about this if you do a search for something along the lines of '18 repower' From what I have read the general consensus is that people love the Yamaha 130s for that boat.

Re: engine power
The DI 2-strokes will equal or beat the 4-strokes in fuel economy and are much lighter, so I think they're a better match for these light narrow hulls that weren't designed for 450-500 lb motors! The E-Tecs also match or beat 4-stroke noise levels and require less maintenance.

Re: engine power
My folks have the 140 Zuke on their 18SF(420lbs +/-) and I had the 130 Yamaha on my old 18SF. The 18 deck will not drain without ball scuppers with any thing over 400 lbs. If you accept that, then you just work around it, but to have the boat function as intended don't go above the high 300lbs.. The 140 Zuke does fine to get on plane and while running, but requires more thought to dockage, rain, and keeping the plug system working right.
