first time transom rebuild
My dad and I are going to rebuild the transom on a 76' 20'. Either one of us has pulled a transom from a boat before. We are pretty handy with tools and repairs so the actual work is intimidating. We just don't know what to expect and what might come up. I have read though some of the information on this site already and have gotten an idea. I just want to know if there is somewhere I can go to get a lot of detail, probably more than someone with expereince would need. We want to do this and do it right the first time so we can move unto more rewarding boat projects.

Re: first time transom rebuild
Not exactly a detailed repair guide but this site has helped me with various repairs, you do need to surf around in the site and you will find stringer and transom repair suggestions www.rotdoctor.com
if that is not the exact address then do a search with rot doctor or rotdoctor. Mark P.S. I just reveiwed the site and there are some good directions in the fiberglass boat section and by the way I Emailed that guy with some questions and he Emailed me right back several times and really helped me. I ended up using a few of his products and found them to be superior to the West Marine stuff. [ June 05, 2002, 03:35 PM: Message edited by: markdpm ]

Re: first time transom rebuild
IF YOU GO TO WEST MARINE THEY HAVE BOOKLETS ON THE WEST SYSTEM IN SOME OF THEM THERE IS INFO ON RE DOING A TRANSOM. I DID MINE FROM THE INSIDE CAME OUT VERY GOOD. THE ONLY THING I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY IS THAT I WOULD HAVE USED 3 PIECES OF ½” MARINE PLY INSTEAD OF TWO ¾” EASER TO WORK WITH AND 6 LAYERS OF LAMINATION SOAKED THROUGH INSTEAD OF 4. THERE IS ALSO SOME VIDEO TAPES FROM SHIP SHAPE TV PROGRAM YOU CAN BUY THAT SHOWS HIM DOING A TRANSOM. I DID MINE USING THE WEST SYSTEM.
