Boat Insurance Question
So my 1973 sf is almost finished and I am thinking that it would be wise to get some theft insurance.
Anyone have any experience getting coverage on an "antique" boat? I just spoke to Geico and they said they could only do liability, not theft. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: Boat Insurance Question
Have you checked Progressive? I've got comprehensive and collision, however it's at an agreed value of $20k. They would not go any higher on a 1978 back in 2003 when I got the coverage. Both boats, same coverage is $735/year total.

Re: Boat Insurance Question
Most insurance companies that would be willing to cover a older boat require a current survey on the boat to determine its value with out it no property coverage.
Progressive could probably do it with out a survey but they sometimes are a little on the high side for the coverage. If you just want liability coverage it is dirt cheep. When I first finished my boat I went with full coverage now I just have approx $100. worth of the best locking system you can use and hope that a thief would rather steal a brand new triple engine boat worth $200,000 instead of my Classic SeaCraft worth $20,000 or so. Re: Boat Insurance Question
Thanks for the suggestions. I will call progressive, but may have to go for the lock/wheel removal option.
The boat is in my backyard surrounded by a locked wood fence, However, I am in Lake Worth, so you never know. Maybe I'll put a bad dog sign up hehe. |

Re: Boat Insurance Question
I loved having Boat US as my insurance. While not the cheapest, they were very competitive and added great value to the overall experience.
Let me explain. When I was insured with BoatUS, I only had to get three estimates of repairs and suggest who I wanted to have do the work. If their estimate was in line with the others I was given authorization for the work to begin. Being up here in New England with its short boating season this was a big help. The reason for this was that I did not have to wait for appraisers to submit their estimates and then wait for the company to get back in touch with me. It could be accomplished in a day are two and a couple of phone calls and I was back in the water at least two weeks sooner. If that's not value, all eat my hat!

Re: Boat Insurance Question
Just for grins, I looked at my policy which is $815, however I pay it all at once and it reduces the two premiums to $735. For the comprehensive and collision coverage for both the Hewes and the SeaCraft comes to $601 of the $815.....yikes! I should look at this more closely. However this extra coveage includes diappearing deductable, wreckage removal, electronics and trailer. You know how it is, I drop the coverage after paying on it for eight years, then the next month someone will steal my boat....I keep the coverage and they won't.
