Motors Done finally
When looking close at the problem cylinder it had 1 scratch that would have been an issue - so pulled it apart and bored all .15 over, lower crank bearing since the seals were worn, new after market reeds ( CCMS), new oil pump and gear just for kicks, it fired up about the 4th revelution - found a burned up recifier, it has 2 and boy it sure charges better too. Got my hour of off plane done and popped it up for a minute or 2 then it was home. Heading out tomorrow to put some more time on it - 10 hrs before WOT - the new Stilleto seems much better, I think its a bow lifter somewhat and appeared so - I need that with the big ol'fat hound dog up there (120) and the T Top and 3 batteries. Mentioned to the guy its much quiter, he responce was you can't hear all the pistons rattling around anymore - I thought that was cute. So far so good. The guy Chris Fuhr was very good, does HP work and has a nice shop at his house with all the goodies - he was VERY reasonable and let Mike at American Marine get all the parts for me =$$. That was a very good combo and depending shipping costs?? might be worth it, just an FYI. Total I got out for was under 2K, just for reference, which I thought was outstanding. Took a bit longer as the Offshore Racing shop that bored it took some extra time off during the holidays, which had me kinda cranky but I think it was worth it I guess, once we got the block and parts Teus motor was running Friday.

so you are still using the same 2.5L block as before? how much power should it be making now?? what brand pistons did you use? i may have to do this to my new 3L.

We bought everything from Pro Marine in Bradenton, they are cast pistons not forged - those are about $40 apiece more and according to most not really needed. I would check on shipping costs for the block, I really think between the the 2 of them I could get you a decent deal - getting the PH off is your issue and mine was not easy - took heat and stuff so it can be tricky so be careful who you would chose - but there is a 40% markup on parts so most times its 3500 for a rebuild. Had it today and froze our ass'es off but got 3 hrs on it - super strong, the new Stilleto prop gave me 3 mph at 3400 25-28. Lifted the bow and the whole boat higher on the chines and it rode completely different. I came back across theb bay with 15kt following wind at 30 and Susan was laying on the bow box to get out of the wind and nothing bounced - amazing in comparison. So Stilletto props also work good, will give more numbers as I get it higher in RPM - today @ 3400 = 28.4 - 3600= 30+ 3800 was 32+ but wasn't there long, 5700 should be fun. You just can't imagine what a difference a prop can make - HP does it too by the way which is why I advocate it, lets the hull work like it should.

I had a PT prop custom made for my boat and power, 15.25"Dx16.5"P, and ended up with a lightly-loaded 6150 rpms at 53 mph, and max of 5800 rpms and 49 mph with 2 guys and fishing gear. Average cruising speed was 28 mph @ 3400. BTW, my custom prop alone was $700. Worth every last penny.

I have a knock sensor that starts retarding at 5800 I think, so thats fine with me it will live longer

So glad you didn`t go with the "British Leyland" fix. Never understood why the Brits would tear down a motor ,replace 1 bearing and call it a jolly good day.

Good for you ESD, I'm happy you have success.......I had never owned a Mercury, always an OMC, until I bought the one I now have used from Eckerd College, it was a super deal. You know the old verbage about Mercs, the "black and never works" thing, whoops....today is not a very good day for that old saying....anyway mine has been a great engine and I would have no problem with purchasing another Mercury.
