suzuki 250 vs. 300
so I am in the process of getting a new suzuki put on my 23cc. I know a lot of people with the 250 have said that they would definitley put a 300 on the next time the repowered.
my question is: what kind of fuel burn are you gettin on the 250, and does it have much for hole shot? I commercial fish and run charters and I am wondering if it is gonna have the power with 1200-1500 lbs of fish, ice and people to get up and go? most of the people with the 300 are getting 3.2-3.5 mpg with the 300 from what ive seen?

I will probably go with the Suzi 300 at repower myself. These are Strick's numbers from his for sale post with 250 Suzi...

I am not entirely sold on Suzuki's as of yet. I am a die hard 2 stroke fan but have had incredible luck with Honda 4 strokes lasting 4-5k hours. As for fuel efficiency, I just ran my 23 Savage, full tank fo fuel, 2 divers and full gear and averaged 32mph burning 11.5 gph averaging roughly 2.78 gph with a yamiha fi 225 ox66 2 stroke (not bad).I shudder when I remember what happened to in the past with suzuki outboards when all the dealers dropped the line, and no one would touch them with a 10ft pole due to numerous defects, problems, etc... Time will tell and once it does I may be more open to the Zuki's

They are also one of the only manufacturers that offer a six year warranty. Suzuki got out of the 2 stroke industry which was a wise decision on their behalf. Either the 250 or 300 would be a good setup for the 23' Seacraft. |

I am interested to see what people write on this thread. Obviously, the 300 is the new big dog in town and the electronic controls seem to be pretty nice. But the 250 looks pretty nice on strick's boat (both in size and numbers). Is the extra 50 HP worth the extra 25% cost? I know bigshrimpin was sort of questioning the idea that a 23 needs 300hp, so that is sort of where I stand right now, but that 300 sure is a nice piece of machinery. And a com guy running a couple hundred hours a year will notice the fuel cost savings, especially at $5/gallon. |

There is no question that the 250 has more then enough power for the 23 hull. I used to read on some of the web sites were people would say that the big 4 strokes did not have the hole shot the 2 strokes did. I think this was a rumor that got out of hand. Maybe some of these boats were not propped right. Hole shot is not a problem with the Suzuki 250 on a 23 SeaCraft. I've never really timed my boat out of the hole but your probably looking at 3 seconds to jump up on plane at the most. This is with the trim tabs in the up position. I fish with 3-4 guys on my boat all the time and she performs very well. I've never thought I needed more power.
The 300 is newer tecnology.. more power and they say slightly better fuel economy then the 250. The 300 was not available when I repowered my boat. If you get a 300 then I highly recommend that you enclose the transom and mount it on twin engine Hermco bracket. You will need a 30 inch shaft motor with this bracket. The flotation chamber in this bracket will be more then enough to offset the additional weight of the 300 Suzuki. Trim tabs are a must have. What it comes down to is how much money you want to spend on your boat. If money is not an object then go for the 300. Either way I think you will be more then happy. Strick

250 suzuki on a 23 is a rocketship. It'll have NO problem getting out of the hole . . . with 1500lbs of dead fish and ice. Don't expect 3.2mpg when your loaded down in typical 3ft seas.
