23' I/O swim platform mounting ?
I am planning on installing a teak swim platform on the 'ole 23'Tsunami i/o this Spring. It is about 6 1/2'-7' long and fairly lightweight ( always a scupper concern !!!). I will be using (4) AFI SS, 3-sided mounting brackets to mount it. A few questions for those who have been there... done that: How do you calculate where the bracket should be mounted w/ relation to the waterline ? I want the platform as low as it can be mounted without hitting the drive when fully trimmed and so when taking off and underway, the platform will not inhibit performance (i.e. be under water ) To avoid transom water damage, has anyone done the 'drill larger holes, fill w/ epoxy and then re-drill smaller holes for the thru bolts '? Lastly, being that I have a Bravo 3 ( SS props ), will the add'l SS brackets underwater create more noticeable galvanic corrosion ? Thx |

I have a side job comming up to hang a kicker bracket and will do the same thing. http://bertram31.com/proj/tips/sleeving.htm It's titled "Hardware mounting in Composites" , but it's a good way to do all of them no matter what the core material is. |

Something else that will help when drilling the holes is one of these to keep the holes stright.

Re: 23' I/O swim platform mounting ?
Hey Craig - I'm hanging ... Got a few projects I'm working on. Swim platform is one. And, I had a little core rot on the bow (10"x10" ) where one of the bow rails mounted to the deck. I plan on cutting out a 16"x16" spot ( hopefully that's it ), re-coring and repairing from the inside. Then w/ a hole saw, cutting out all the other areas where the bow rail bolts mount thru core; going to fill w/ epoxy and re-drill holes to avoid anymore rot. As a matter of fact, I plan on doing that procedure where any screw/bolt goes thru wood/balsa - anywhere on the boat. I have played enough with rotted core to know that I do not want to do it anymore !!! That tool is cool, might have to get one for the platform - this is an area where you only get one shot to get it right ( or you end up doing a lot filling etc. ). As for the epoxying of oversized PVC/Copper tube - I cannot see the benefit ? Can you explain ? I can see the benefit of oversize drilling initial hole - then filling w/ epoxy/cabosil - curing, then redrilling proper hole - so as to avoid water into core... |
